Having finished his featured role in "Chicago Ben," for Gaumont British in London, Edgar Kennedy has spent two weeks touring the British Isles and France and will return to Hollywood. . . . A troupe of "doubles" of stars will leave New York, July 7, for London for tours of England and the Continent in a revue set by Kurt Robitschek, European producer. Fred Kohlmar, former Goldwyn aide, has joined Columbia as an associate producer. . . . RKO has purchased film rights to the play, "The Night of January 16." . . . Talk of "Recession" Hit by Schlesinger Hollywood, July 5. — Leon Schlesinger today denounced exhibitor and other spokesmen recently in print with explanations of alleged box-office recessions, declaring : "All this business needs is a few lessons on what constitutes a good meal of entertainment. Give a child too much and it makes him sick. Giving the public 4 and 5 hour shows has the same effect. When we return to a newsreel cartoon, a novelty and a good single feature, all this squawking, boxoffice depression and confusion will do a fadeout." Schlesinger has annonuced 42 short subjects for the 1938-39 season. Takes Over G. N. Branch Seattle, July 5. — L. K. Brin has arrived here to take over the management of the Grand National exchange. He succeeds Danny Matin, resigned. Brin was branch manager for First National in this city about 10 years ago, and later operated the Egyptian here. Reopen at Rutherfordton Charlotte, July 5. — The Sylvan of Rutherfordton, N. C, reopened July 1 after having been closed several weeks for remodeling. Morris Littman is the new manager. "Hunted Men" And Miss Rand Denver Smash Denver, July 5. — "Hunted Men," with Sally Rand on the stage, was a sensation at the Denham. The $10,000 gross was $4,500 over normal. "Blockade," with "Nurse from Brooklyn," pulled a strong $5,500 at the Paramount. This was $2,000 into the profit column. Total first run business was $40,000. Average is $32,750.
