After playing 18 weeks at the Carthay Circle to a total gross of $214,339 it opened at popular prices at the Hillstreet and Pantages to extraordinary business. At the Hillstreet the $21,000 gross was more than three times the normal take — $14,500 over average, to be exact. At the Pantages the $19,500 gross was $12,500 above par. "White Banners," dualled with "Torchy Blane at Panama," also was strong. It grossed $16,500, up by $2,500, at Warners' Hollywood and took $16,900, over the line by $4,900, at Warners' Downtown. Dick Offenbacher, former assistant at the Regent, has been made manager of the Princess. Frank Collins, manager of the State, Greenville, O., has been transferred to the main offices of the circuit here in charge of the booking, exploitation and operating departments. Goldwyn to Do "Cavalry" Hollywood, July 6. — Samuel Goldwyn will produce "Seventh Cavalry." based on the exploits of this country's number one "show regiment." Gary Cooper will be starred. The picture will deal with the period following the Civil War when the outfit was commanded by General Custer. Actual outdoor locations and Montana Indians as extras are planned. Composer, Too Toronto, July 6. — W. A. Summerville, proprietor of the Prince of Wales Theatre here, has further demonstrated his versatility. In addition to being a member of the Ontario legislature and a former member of the Toronto City Council for years, he has turned composer. Mr. Summerville is responsible for the patriotic composition, "A British Song," which has been adopted as the theme number for the reunion in Toronto this summer of members of the Canadian Corps which served in France during the Great War. "Woman" Gets $18,000 Top, Philadelphia Philadelphia, July 6. — Three days of almost incessant rain, plus elaborate ceremonies celebrating the Swedish Tercentennial in this section (one fete along the Schuylkill River drew more than 200,000) shoved the film business in the red. The only house not to slip was the Earle where "Woman Against Woman" and a large-sized stage bill held up to a strong $18,000. "Blockade" drooped at the Stanley with only $11,500. "You and Me" flopped at the Fox with $10,000. "Holiday" made a weak second week finish with the same figure. Total first run business was $62,500. Average is $73,800.
