MOTION PICTURE DAILY Friday, July 15, 1938 "Crime" Pulls Minneapolis' Top, $6,000 Minneapolis, July 14. — "Crime School" at the Orpheum led the boxoffice procession in Minneapolis at $6,000 against an average of $5,600. It was the only loop theatre to reach its average. In St. Paul "Yellow Jack" and "When Were You Born?" at the Riviera, and "The Devil's Party" and "Mr. Moto Takes a Chance" at the Tower were both well over average. The Riviera grossed $2 200 against $1,300 and the Tower grossed $1,800 against $1,100. Total first run business in Minneapolis was $15,750. Prices were tilted for the stage show. "Having Wonderful Time" and "Blind Alibi" pulled $5,700 in seven days at the Brandeis for a neat profit of $1,700 over seven-day average. "Tropic Holiday" and "Tip-Off Girls" grossed $7,200 to beat the seven-day par by $1,700 at the Omaha. The Omaha held for a second week. It was the best week in some months. "Gold Diggers in Paris" and "Gangs of New York" took $13,000 at the Metropolitan, $2,000 over par. Loew's State and Loew's Orpheum, billing "Port of Seven Seas" and "Fast Company," fell under par, with $9,000 and $10,500, respectively. Total first run business was $59,000. Average is $59,500. "Kidnapped," on a double bill at the Capitol, brought $6,000, as compared with $9,500 average, while "You and Me," with a second feature, accounted for $4,500 at the Princess where average is $7,000. "Time," "Born" Are Milwaukee Leaders Milawaukee, July 14. — Pace-setters in a week which saw thousands leaving the city for the Fourth of July holidays and as many more visiting parks and beaches, were "Having a Wonderful Time" and "When Were You Born?" which collected $7,000 at the Warner, just $2,000 above average. All other business fizzled out like a wet firecracker. Total first run business was $24,100. Average is $26,500. This was $1,000 over normal. "Swiss Miss," on a return engagement and played with "Law of the Underworld" at the Liberty for four days, turned in $1,200, up by $300. M-G-M Starts 3 More Hollywood, July 14. — M-G-M has just started three new pictures — "Three Loves Has Nancy," "Listen, Darling" and "Stablemates." "Rage" Pulls Kansas City's Only Big Take Kansas City, July 14. — First runs wilted under the heat and the double holiday and made one of the worst collective showings in weeks at box offices. However, "The Rage^j Paris" and stage show at the Fox Tower managed to squeeze $400 over average for a gross of $7,400, the only house to make the grade. The same picture did $3,700 at the Uptown, where $4,000 is par. "Tropic Holiday" was worth $6,800, $200 shy of the mark, at the Newman, where it paired with "Farewell to Arms" for the house's first double in many weeks. Total first run business was $33,400. (Average, $4,000) Denver Party Set Aug. 18 Denver, July 14. — The Rocky Mountain Screen Club will hold its annual picnic at the Cherry Hills Country Club, scene of the 1938 National Open Golf tournament, Aug. 18. Besides golf the usual distributoi ■ exhibitor baseball game will be held. A bridge tournament will run in the afternoon, with dancing and a banquet in the evening. Tentative plans are being made to hold the annual convention of the Rocky Mountain Theatre Owners and Managers on Aug. 17. President A. P. Archer expects to call a board meeting within a few weeks to map plans for the convention. Takes Tulare Postoffice San Francisco, July 14. — Clarence Wasserman, veteran bay area theatre man, has taken over the old Tulare Postoffice, which he will convert into a theatre. Approximately $5,000 is being spent to remodel the El Camino Theatre at San Bruno, in the suburbs, by Golden State Theatres. The Temple Theatre here, a small house, is also undergoing remodelling. Steve Choriak is the new owner of the Lincoln Theatre in Oakland. Moderate alterations and remodelling are planned. Kansas City Gets Vallee Kansas City, July 14. — Rudy Vallee and his company have been signed to appear in the Jubilesta, eight-day municipal show to be held here Sept 17 to 25, in the Municipal Auditorium.
