Wrigley, Jr., Co. over CBS has set an all-time record for a commercial series by using 112 CBS stations in United States, Canada and Hawaii. Gladys Cronkhite, 10-year veteran of various coast stations, has taken her International Kitchen, home economics show, to KGO . . . Senator William Gibbs McAdoo, campaigning for reelection, has scheduled eight political talks for KPO . • • Wes Craig, ex-KGGC technician, has joined the KYA staff . . . Don Stuart, known as "Percy the Playwright" on Carefree Carnival, has returned to KGO after a year in Hollywood. WXYZ Dramatic Head Detroit, July 17. — Charles D. Livingstone, for the past four years assistant dramatic director at WXYZ, has been named director of dramatics to succeed James Jewell, who resigned recently. Mr. Livingstone will have charge of all dramatic shows originating at WXYZ, in which are included "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet," both heard over the Mutual and Don Lee networks. Tom Dougall, writer and assistant director on the WXYZ staff, will be assistant to Mr. Livingstone. Ratify AFRA Contract Members of the New York local of the American Federation of Radio Artists on Friday night voted ratification of the agreement reached last Wednesday with the NBC and CBS networks providing for wage scales on sustaining programs. Mutual Will Air Serial "Men With Wings," a radio dramatization based on the Paramount picture, will be heard serially from KHJ, Los Angeles, over WOR-Mutual beginning July 31. The serial will run for 13 weeks. Seek Agreement for Music, Actor Unions An effort to effect a cooperative working agreement between the American Federation of Actors and the American Federation of Musicians will be undertaken by Ralph Whitehead, executive secretary of the former, and Joseph W. Weber, president of the musicians' union, in conferences which will be begun this week. The idea of a national working agreement to facilitate organizing and extend the aims of both unions was approved by the international council of the A. F. of M. at its annual meeting in Tampa last winter, after hearing the proposal from Mr. Whitehead. If the conferences result in agreement on a cooperative plan it will be submitted to the councils of both organizations for ratification. The A. F. of M. already has entered into such a cooperative working agreement with the I. A. T. S. E. Seeks Approval of Station in Arizona Washington, July 17. — Construction permit for a new 1,500 kilocycle broadcasting station, to operate with 100 watts power at night, 250 watts day, was sought of the Federal Communications Commission today by M. C. Reese, Phoenix, Ariz. Applications were also filed with the commission by Stations WTOL, Toledo, Ohio, for extension of time from day to unlimited ; WTMV, East St. Louis, 111., for increase of night power from 100 to 250 watts ; KRMC, Jamestown, N. Dak., for change of frequency from 1,370 to 900 kilocycles and increase of power from 100 watts night, 250 watts day, to 500 watts night, 1,000 watts day; and KFBB, Great Falls, Mont., for change of frequency from 1,280 to 900 kilocycles and increase of night power from 1,000 to 5,000 watts. White to Ask Probe Of All Broadcasting Washington, July 17. — Senator W. H. White of Maine stated over the weekend that he would ask the 1939. Congress to authorize a broad inquiry into radio broadcasting. Specifically, he would like to probe chain broadcasting, Government ownership of stations, licensing of superpower stations, Congressional interest in rates and practices, newspaper ownership of stations and censorship. Signs for WMCA Spot Maxwell House Coffee has booked time on WMCA for 26 weeks, beginning Dec. 6. The program will feature Molly Picon and will be heard on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 8 P. M. Further details have not been set yet. WOR to Air Track Meet WOR-Mutual will broadcast the activities of the International Athletic Meeting from the White Stadium in London on Aug. 1, from 11 :15 to 12 noon, E. D. S. T. Sign for Time on WHN McCann-Erickson has placed station-break announcements for Flit over WHN. The programs will run for four weeks. Stanco, Inc., will sponsor. Montreal, July 17. — Returning to Canada after a six-month study of broadcasting methods in England and on the Continent, George A. Taggart, program executive of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., is convinced the present nationalized system is the only logical solution for the radio problems of this country. "I feel that Canadians do not want a facsimile of any individual system," he said. "Canada is sufficiently individualistic and original to wish to build a system which is thoroughly Canadian in character." Mr. Taggart, exchanging places with Laurence Gilliam of BBC, who recently returned to England after a six-month stay as guest of CBC, was the first Canadian to go abroad on the new exchange basis between the two systems. Canada, he believes, has a wealth of program material v/orthy of international broadcasting. New Show Set on WKRC Cincinnati, July 17. — "Personalities on Parade," in which local persons with an unusual story to tell, are interviewed, will be resumed on WKRC July 19, and continue as a regular 6 P. M. feature on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program was discontinued in the spring. Marsha Wheeler again will do the interviewing. To Broadcast from Fair Cincinnati, July 17. — WKRC will carry exclusive broadcasts from the race track during the Carthage Fair, an annual suburban event, to be held Sept. 14 to 17. Ceceil Carmichael, special events director, is arranging for other exclusive airings, according to an announcement. Two Commentators Sign Two new morning commentators have been engaged by CBS for broadcasts commencing today. They are Ruth Bryan, who will be heard from 8 :30 to 8 :45 Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and George Perrine who will be heard at the same time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. CBS Will Honor Berlin CBS will broadcast a special program in honor of Irving Berlin on Aug. 3 from 9:30 to 10:30 P. M., E. D. S. T. Guests will include Paul Whiteman, Rudy Vallee, Tommy Dorsey and Guy Lombardo in addition to a number of soloists. Start New Series Tonight Andre Monici, French orchestra leader, will begin a new series of sustaining programs over the NBC-Red network tonight at 10:30 P. M., E. D. S. T.
