MOTION PICTURE DAILY Thursday, August 4. 1938 "Amazing" Big In Two Houses On the Coast Los Angeles, Aug. 3. — "The Amazg Dr. Clitterhouse," on a dual with lr. Chump," set the pace in a pickup I here by getting $19,500 at Warners' 'Hollywood and $19,000 at Warners' [ Downtown. The former was $5,500 lover par and the latter was up by $7,000. "Having Wonderful Time," with "Wives Under Suspicion," also was in the money. The Hillstreet $10,000 take was up bv $3,500 and the Pantages take of $11,000 was $4,000 to the good. "Algiers" held up to $6,585 in its third week at the Star. This was $3,335 above normal. Total first run business was $111,823. Average is $100,950. An open church ceremony will be followed by a reception at the Anshe Emoth Temple. Leary Returning to Job Albany, Aug. 3. — -A. Gerald Leary, Universal branch manager, will return to his desk soon after an emergency appendicitis operation, performed early in July. Mr. Leary has been recuperating at Otsego Lake, outside of Cooperstown. In his absence, Max Cohen, of the New York office, has been in charge. "Cowboy" Is $6,800 Draw at Milwaukee Milwaukee, Aug. 3. — "Cowboy from Brooklyn" and "My Bill" connected for $6,800 at the Warner, just $1,800 above average, the only other combination to make the grade was "Little Miss Broadway" and "Romance of the Limberlost" at Fox's Wisconsin, which grossed $8,500, just $500 to the good. She did more business than Guy Lombardo, Olsen & Johnson, Fred Waring, Tommy Dorsey or any recent stage show except Mae West. The take for the week was $28,000 where average, with a stage attraction, is $15,000. The film was "You and Me." "Love Finds Andy Hardy," playing a second week downtown at Loew's Stillman after a week at Loew's State, boosted the take $1,500 over par to $5,000. Total first run business was $55,900. "Hardy" Is $8,000 Top, Indianapolis Indianapolis, Aug. 3. — "Love Finds Andy Hardy," on a dual with "Dark Journey" at Loew's, did the business here in an uneventful, average summer week. The take was $8,000, over normal by $1,000. They were held. Also $1,000 over the line was business at the Lyric, where "Cowboy from Brooklyn" on the screen and "Jamboree of Joy" on the stage pulled $9,000. Total first run business was $22,700. This was $6,500 over par. Summer weather affected other houses, but "Reformatory" at the Golden Gate took $14,500 and "The Texans" and "My Bill" drew $15,500 at the Fox. "White Banners," figuring on a double bill, brought $5,000 to the Princess where all-year par is $7,000, while "Port of Seven Seas," on a dual, secured $6,500 at the Capitol compared with $9,500 average.
