The theatre was sub-leased by Brandt Bros, after Warners dropped it following a brief double feature first run attempt. Short Subject Reviews "Memory Tricks" (M-G-M) Here is a Pete Smith "Specialty" which deserves screen time anywhere and is likely to start a new rage in parlor games. Briefly, the trick in memory training which Smith describes is to associate the numbers from one to 10 with objects whose names rhyme with the numbers. Then, if there are 10 thingsto be remembered, each one is associated with one of the objects whose name rhymes with the number. It is an old trick in mnemonics but will be new to most audiences. The beauty of the trick is that the audience can convince itself that it really works because Smith, after explaining the stunt, goes all through it again. The reel lends itself readily to exploitation on the basis of mind improvement generally and the memory in particular. It should be featured. Running time, 9 mins. "Canine Sketches" (Paramount) For this Sportlight, Grantland Rice has taken a sport subject which invariably makes for interesting film material, gun dogs at work in the field. The thoroughbreds are first seen at the studio of Lynn Hunt posing for a sketch. The scene shifts to the field with the various springer spaniels, Labrador retrievers and setters pointing, flushing or retrieving. Their work is remarkable. Running time, 10 minutes. "Ye Olde Minstrels" (M-G-M) Our Gang undertakes to help the American Red Cross by raising some money. Froggy suggests a minstrel show and the idea is adopted. A big production is staged with 35 youngsters on five platforms. Trick lighting effects aid the dance numbers and there are several songs, including "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," "Camptown Races" and "Oh, Susanna." It should please. Running time, 11 mins. "The Seeing Eye" (Warners) Presented here is a tender subject on the Seeing Eye, Inc., the institution in Morristown, N. J., which teaches dogs to "see" for persons who can't. The film follows the various phases of instruction given both dog and his blind master through to what is referred to as the "solo," the first time the instructor places full responsibility on the dog to guide the blind man about town. It is moving short film and definitely worthwhile. Running time, 21 mins. (Abdul-the Bulbul Ameer' (Harmon-M-G-M) Those two ferocious warriors, Abdul El Bulbul Ameer and Ivan Scavinsky Scavar, celebrated in the highly popular song, are brought to the screen by Hugh Harmon in an amusing color cartoon. After several verses from the song are rendered to put the audience into the proper mood, the two warriors go into their justly famous battle. It should be popular. Running time, 8 mins. "Baby Blues" (M-G-M) An Our Gang comedy which is not up to snuff. Mickey discovers that every fourth baby born is Chinese and becomes worried that his next brother will be an Oriental. His expected brother turns out to be twins, both girls, and both non-Chinese. Running time, 9 mins. "The Prospecting Bear" (Ising-M-G-M) Papa Bear is back again, this time searching for gold with the aid of a small burro who enjoys a diet of dynamite. He discovers a cave full of the precious metal, but his efforts to reach it by blasting his way through the entrance meet with disaster. As amusing as ever, the reel should bring lots of laughs. In color. Running time, 9 mins. 'Wind' in Montreal Draws Big $11,000 Montreal, April 3. — "Gone With the Wind," in its second week at Loew's, took $11,000; "Strawberry Blonde" $6,000 at the Capitol.
