Dunn has cut the new film licenses issued here from two to one per cent of gross receipts of each theatre, after having received exhibitors' promises to absorb the license without passing it on to the public. Even with the cut. the city will receive from 500 to 700 per cent more from exhibitors than heretofore received. Licenses had previously ranged in flat sums from $300 to $500. Claim 'Singing' Record Universal's "Can't Help Singing," broke all attendance and box office records at the Criterion Theatre for the week ended New Year's Day, when paid admissions totalled 64,231, according to Charles Moss. Cincinnati Heavy, 'Victory' on Top Cincinnati, Jan. 3. — The New Year got off to a good start, with figures at practically all houses headed for upper brackets. Topping the list for a record in recent months is "Winged Victory," winging its way to an approximate $21,000, a plusaverage gross of $7,500, while "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" continues strong in its second week at RKO's Grand, with $10,000 in sight. Employees received a full year's life insurance, plus government bonds. 430 Seconds' Goes $4,000 Over Top Boston, Jan. 3. — The much publicized "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" opened with a bang this week and was the main attraction at both Loew theatres, going $4,000 over par. Alex Gottlieb will produce and Helmut Dantine will be starred. Woolley to Play Woolley Hollywood, Jan. 3. — Monty Woolley has been signed by Jack L. Warner to play himself in "Night and Day," the story of Cole Porter and his music. Woolley has long been a friend of the composer. Phila. Business Is Good; 'Canteen' Goes $28,500 Over Philadelphia, Jan. 3. — Despite bad weather on New Year's Eve, and local Blue Laws keeping most of the center city night clubs closed, which lessened the inducement to go into town, theatre business here soared in the midcity houses. "Hollywood Canteen" at the Mastbaum points to $28,500 over average, with an additional $8,000 for the dual Sunday showing at the Earle. Among other openings, "The Princess and the Pirate", at the Stanley, looks like $38,500, while "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" at the Fox will get $34,800, both over average.
