Motion Picture Daily Tuesday, November 12, 1946 'Night of Stars' to Be Staged Tonight The 13th annual "Night of Stars," for Palestine resettlement and refugee relief, will be given tonight at Madison Square Garden. Sylvan Gotshal is chairman of the affiair. Proceeds will go to the United Jewish Appeal on behalf of the Joint Distribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service. An estimated 1,500 stars, musicians and technicians, under supervision of Marvin H. Schenck, chairman of the producing committee, will participate in the show. Assistants to Schenck include : Arthur Knorr, Roxy Theatre, in charge of lighting ; Sidney Piermont, Loew's, stage manager ; Don Albert, director of the symphony orchestra, and Robert M. Weitman, Paramount Theatre, co-chairman, and Lester B. Isaac and Max Wolff, vicechairmen ; Alan Corelli, John Dugan, Ernest Emerling, William Feinberg, Harry Kalcheim, Nat Kalcheim, Leon Leonidoff, Larry Puck, Sam Rauch, Frank Roehrenbeck, Leonard Romm and John Shubert. Zukor Group Travels Through Britain A contingent of Paramount executives, headed by Adolph Zukor, chairman of the board of directors, this week will visit provincial cities in England to introduce to the organization's staff and to the press and exhibitors its new chairman and managing director for Great Britain, J. E. Perkins, who was officially installed in London last week, the home office reported here yesterday. The entourage, which includes George Weltner, president of Paramount International ; Fred E. Hutchinson, general sales manager for the UK and T. C. Reddin, director of advertising, publicity and theatres in the UK, will go to Cardiff, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Next week they will conclude the tour with visits to Glasgow and New Castle, and then return to London. Johnston To Return In About 10 Days London, Nov. 11. — Eric Johnston, Motion Picture Association president, who suffered an attack of pneumonia here last week, was slightly improved today and plans to return to the U. S. as soon as his doctors will permit and travel reservations can be made. He must, however, remain in bed for at least 10 days longer, according to the physicians. Johnston's projected tour of the Continent has been cancelled, as previously reported. Para. Paris Shows Start Paris trade showings of Paramount product were commenced last week when a morning screening of "The Hitler Gang" was made for exhibitors at the Paramount Theatre there, according to the home office. Personal Mention STAN SHUFORD, Paramount ad vertising manager, is due back from the Coast today. • Angela Greene, Warners star, arrived in New York by plane from the Coast yesterday. She will be married soon to Stuart Martin, Los Angeles realtor. • Herbert J. Yates, Republic president, and his executive assistant, William Saal, left Hollywood via American Airlines for New York yesterday. • William Wyler, vice-president of Liberty Films, and his wife, actress Margaret Tallichet, have arrived in New York from Hollywood. • Rodney Bush, Sid Blumenstock and Eddie Solomon, 20th-Fox exploiteers, returned to New York yesterday from Chicago. • Floyd Crowder, Monogram distributor in China, has left New York for the Coast from where he will embark for Shanghai. • Frank Gibson, director of M-G-M studio construction in London, has left the Coast by American Airlines for New York. • Cliff Work, vice-president and general manager of Universal-International, has left Hollywood by plane for New York. • Virginia Mayo, Samuel Goldwyn Productions actress, is due to arrive in New York by plane from the Coast this morning. • Carol Brandt, Eastern M-G-M editorial head, returned to New York yesterday from Europe on the Queen Elisabeth. 0 A. J. O'Keefe, Universal's general assistant sales manager, is due to arrive in Pittsburgh from New York today. • Ben Goetz, M-G-M executive, is in Hollywood from New York. He will leave the Coast shortly for London. • Arthur de Bra, Motion Picture Association executive, left New York yesterday for Grand Rapids, Mich. • Lon McCallister, United Artists actor, arrived in New York yesterday by plane from the Coast. • Barney Gerard, Monogram producer, has planed out of Hollywood for New York. • Anne Jeffreys, RKO Radio star, has planed out of Hollywood for New York. • Mischa Auer is due in New York by American Airlines from the Coast. • Bob Hope has returned to Hollywood from Baltimore and New York. • Lt. Comm. Wayne Morris arrived here yesterday from the Coast. CHARLES SCHLAIFER, 20th Century-Fox advertising-publicityexploitation and radio director, will return to New York today from Chicago. • Harold Hendee, director of research for RKO Radio, will speak on Nov. 15 before a meeting of the Springfield, Mass., Motion Picture Council. Charles S.
