Qam^xl&te. S&utice. A number of new films are reaping fortunes at New York first-runs and this in spite of Sunday's dreary weather and rain. "The Yearling," "Sinbad the Sailor," "Lady in the Lake," "Dead Reckoning" and "Tower of London" all are making very important box-office showings. "The Yearling" with a stage show at the Music Hall drew $85,000 Thursday through Sunday, thus indicating a triumphant $139,000 for its first week. A new weekday attendance and resume record was rung up Monday. "Sinbad the Sailor" is the cause of record box-office commotion at the Palace, bringing an amazing $44,000 during the five days aiding Sunday night ; the first week's figures will wind up around $53,000, a new high for the theatre. "Dead Reckoning" gave the Criterion a lofty $19,000 on Saturday and Sunday and the total for the first wee'^ is expected to reach $50,000. This is short of the record bv only $6,000 "Tower of London" has improved with age, it seems, the reissue is heading for a $14,000 first week at the Rialto which is an increase over business brought in by the film at the jame theatre in 1939. "Lady in the Lake," with Tex Benake's orchestra on stage, is providing the Capitol with very healthy income a total of $93,000 being looked for in the initial week. "The Man I Love" and Charlie Barnet's orchestra are also a capable combination at the Strand where $62,000 for the first week is in view. "Swell Guy" bowed in at the Winter Garden and the results here, too, are good. Gross for the first week should hit $35,000, which although not a capacity figure, is substantial. ' Wake Up and Dream" is doing well 'nough at the Victoria, where $15000 is anticipated for the first week. "Her Sister's Secret" is on its way to an estimated $9,500— about fair— in its first week at the Gotham. (< "The Best Years of Our Lives" and "13 Rue Madeleine" continue in the top-monev bracket. "Madeleine" with Gracie Fields topping a vaudeville show at the Roxy took in a splendid {Continued on page 11) The weather and first-run busiiT_ both have been good.
