"The Hucksters" opened yesterday in eight Loew first-run theatres and is scheduled to open today in more than 350 throughout the country, including the Capitol o" Broadway. Rank Buys Interest In 2 Dutch Circuits London, July 16.— J. Arthur Rank has acquired an interest in two Dutch theatre circuits which have been amalgamated. The circuits include 12 theatres and five additional buildings. John Davis, general manager of the Rank interests, will manage the new acquisitions. Johnston Sees No Economic Upset Russia has made a great mistake in banking upon a major economic upset in the United States in the near future, Eric Johnston, president of the Motion Picture Association, told a press conference in Paris, according to cables reaching here from the French capital. Expressing confidence that the present sixteen-nation conference for the salvation of Europe will be successful, the motion picture executive said he was convinced that the American people and the American Congress were "determined to assist Western Europe in her economic recovery." Widespread fear of a depression in the United States, leading to economic chaos there, is noticeable through most of Europe, Johnston said. He attributed this to constant propaganda by the Soviet Union. MPA Board Meet July 30 Washington, July 16. — Eric A. Johnston, now in Europe, reportedly will be in New York on July 30 to attend a board meeting of the Motion Picture Association, of which he is president. WB in Dorsey Disc Show Warner Brothers has purchased 12 participating units weekly in the Tommy Dorsey "disc-jockey" show on New York station WMCA. The contract, placed through Blain Thompson Agency, is for a period of 26 weeks and calls for two units daily in the promotion of Warner pictures and theatres in the New York area. $68,000 for 'Brute' "Brute Force," Mark Hellinger production being distributed by Universal-International, set a new nonholiday opening day record of $10,500 at Loew's Criterion Theatre in New York yesterday and is said to be headed for a new all-time house record of $68,000 for its initial week, Screen Publicists Leave Studio Group Hollywood, July 16. — The Screen Publicists Guild last night announced its withdrawal from the Conference of Studio Unions after a secret vote favoring the action 160 to 115. The SPG has not participated as a unit in the present studio strike, leaving the question of observing picket lines to individual members. The union is still a part of the " Painters International and no movement for any other affiliation is said to be under consideration. .',■:! i & I 5 Walter Donaldson Coast Rites Today Hollywood, July 16. — High Requiem Mass for Walter Donaldson, 54, writer of many song hits, who died here yesterday, will be read tomorrow morning at the Roman Catholic Church in Santa Monica.
