She is defended by women attorney Ariane Ar¬ den, but an interlocutory divorce is granted. She returns to Paris, but before the divorce can become final, Roberts returns, and there is a reconciliation. X-Ray: The prime selling point of this entry is the fact that scenes filmed in nudist camps are featured, and where this type of entry can play, it will probably do well. The story is mediocre as are the perform¬ ances, direction, and production. The screen¬ play is by Gaston Hakim. Ad Lines: “They Wanted To Condemn Nudity”; “A Story About Nudism For Adults Only.” Power Among Men documentary Louis de Rochemont (Black and white — Color) Estimate: Intelligent film of United Na¬ tions at work. Credits: Produced for the United Nations Film Board by the U.N. Film Services, with Thorold Dickinson in charge of production; commentary by Laurence Harvey. Story: The First episode takes place in 1946 in a small village in Italy whose in¬ habitants are beginning to return to the re¬ mains of their homes. The entire community pitches in to rebuild with materials provided by UNRRA. The camera returns to 1957 with the village functioning normally once again. In Haiti, a UN expert is assigned to help the people with their land, and they soon make progress with their crops. This irritates the local merchant to whom most are in debt. When they want to build a badly needed road, he tries to stop them, but progress will not be denied. In British Columbia, Canada, a huge hydroelectric station is con¬ structed as well as an aluminum plant and a town in a matter of five years. The way that people of 31 nationalities get along is illustrated. When hundreds of bees die in Norway, the beekeeper assumes it was caused by radioactivity from the nearby Atomic Energy Institute. He is taken on a tour of the plant, and the operation of this as well as other similar installations is explained in ordinary language. X-Ray: An intelligent and fairly interest¬ ing presentation of the United Nations in action is to be found here, with the subject matter varying along with the backgrounds. The release is eminently suited to art and specialty spots, with much interest and en¬ thusiasm coming from school and college areas. It should be noted that it is not merely a recounting involving facts and figures, but rather the emotions, hopes, and fears of humans in a number of places. What emerges on screen is unusual and interesting. Ad Lines: “The United Nations At Work”; “A Film That Looks At The World Of Today And The Hopes Of Tommorrow." Third Man On The MountainD*A“A 1U5M. Buena Vista (Technicolor) (Filmed in Switzerland) Estimate: Satisfactory yarn about moun¬ tains and the people who climb them. Cast: Michael Rennie, James MacArthur, Janet Munro, James Donald, Herbert Lorn, Laurence Naismith, Nora Swinburne, Lee Patterson, Walter Fitzgerald, Ferdy Mayne. Produced by William H. Anderson; directed by Ken Annakin. Story: In 1865 in Switzerland, James Mac¬ Arthur, son of a famous guide dead some years, has a yen to climb a forbidding moun¬ tain called The Citadel, the top of which his father almost reached before he died. While out on a glacier one day, he saves the life of famous English mountaineer Michael Rennie. Rennie persuades the boy’s uncle, guide James Donald, to permit the boy to come along on a climb as a porter. When he goes off alone to explore, it almost leads to a disaster, and Donald refuses to take him along again. MacArthur is encour¬ aged to keep learning by his girl, Janet Munro. When he learns that Rennie has hired Herbert Lorn, a guide from a neighbor¬ ing village, to take him up The Citadel, he follows. MacArthur is sure his father found a path that would take them to the top, and he persuades the others to give him a crack at it, with Donald agreeing to go along. A head wound slows Rennie, and Lorn tries to be the first to reach the top. He falls, hurting himself. MacArthur goes to his rescue instead of continuing to the top. Rennie and Donald go on to the top, planting MacArthur’s father’s red shirt. The boy helps the wounded guide to safety, and all are greeted as conquering heroes. X-Ray: Mountain climbing can be a sus¬ penseful business and when the film devotes itself to this, it is absorbing and loaded with thrills. The other sequences are moderately interesting, and a bit of editing to tighten the entry would have increased its value. The performances are good, and direction and production are capable. The screenplay is by Eleanore Griffin based on “Banner In The Sky” by James Ramsey Ullman. The towering Alpine peaks make a fine back¬ drop in color for the yarn. Tips On Bidding: Better program rates or higher, depending on situation.
