With some of the larger record shops the theatres will run a “Lucky Photo” tie-in. Decca Records is giving away an autographed photo of Rock Hudson with each recording of Rock singing “PILLOW TALK” and “ROLY POLY.” We will stamp the theatre name on the back of about a dozen of these photos, which will entitle the lucky buyers to see the picture as our guests. These lucky records will be sold on the opening day of the picture, and the give-away will be adver¬ tised in the store window and in local ads. Some of the theatres are hooking up a telephone in their lobbies connected to a turntable playing the Day record in the box office. Card reads: “Pick up the ’phone— listen in on “PILLOW TALK.” Stressing the idea of selling the picture away from the theatres at minimum cost, many merchant tie-ups are planned. For the RKO Palace world premiere on Rroadway (Thursday, Oct. 6), the Manhattan News Company bannered their trucks and distributed rack cards in 150 stores, selling the “PILLOW TALK” book. This will be carried through for the neighbor¬ hood theatres with additional distributors and stores brought into the tie-up. In the same way that five R. H. Macy Stores were tied-up for Doris Day hair-do displays for the Palace premiere, the local theatres will tie-in their own neighborhood beauty salons. The press book lists some excellent fashion stills for Doris Day, a made-to-order tie-up with Cardinal Clothes Stores for Tony Randall, and some fine stills for hosiery, pillow, and jewelry store tie-ups. All of these will be used for window displays in the neighborhoods. A couple of theatres have already arranged for a simple guessing contest in furniture store windows. Stores are plac¬ ing a high pile of decorative throw-pillows in their windows, with guest tickets to persons guessing the number of pillows on display. Two stores are set to use a blow-up of Hudson and Day reclining against pillows, cut out and placed in a real bed in their windows. This still is the same one featured in many of the press book ads.
