Fund Sponsors "Beach" Bow
LOS ANGELES — For the first time in its history, the Fund for the Republic — Ford Foundation organization devoted to the pres¬ ervation of freedom and justice — will sponsor a motion picture premiere, with the Los Angeles opening of Stanley Kramer’s “On The Beach,” a United Artists release, at Grauman’s Chinese on Dec. 17.
Announcement of the Fund’s participation in the simultaneous opening for the United Artists release in major cities on all seven continents was announced by its President, Robert M. Hutchins.
Margolis Heads Chi Tent
CHICAGO — William G. Margolis of the Har¬ lem Globetrotters, who recently completed his second year as chief barker of Tent 26, Variety Club of Illinois, was reelected for a third term at a meeting of the newly elected crew. Other Tent 26 officers elected are Nat Nathanson, mid-west division manager of Allied Artists, first assistant chief barker; Dan Goldberg, Teitel Films, second assistant chief barker; Harry Balaban, H & E Balaban Corporation, dough guy; and Sam Levinsohn, Chicago Chair In¬ dustries, property master.
Rank Aids Deaf Patrons
LONDON — Rank Theatres have started a service to mail deaf patrons synopses of all releases. Following a suggestion in a Sunday paper correspondence column, synopses, cast lists, and descriptives were prepared, and the mailing list now covers schools, clubs, and individuals throughout the country. Publica¬ tions catering for the deaf have applauded the scheme with the result that requests have been received from as far afield as Australia. The value of the scheme is shown in the steadily increasing number of requests for the service.
