B, 602 WEST 52 ST., N.Y. 19 • Phone: PL 7-0440 UFA— Profitable Pest Control For Drive-Ins From Todd Shipyards Corp., Products Division The success of any drive-in theater is in direct ratio of the comfort of its audiences. And the owner who insures ths comfort will receive dividends in increased attendance and even more profitable “repeat” business. “Once bitten, twice shy” may be an old cliche; yet it is an excellent yardstick of the most serious threat to drive-in theater busi¬ ness anywhere. But to be more specific, the typical drive-in theater requires considerable land, the cost of which would be prohibitive in most urban centers. Hence the trend has been to build in outlying districts where space is plentiful and cheap. Too often, though, these locations are adjacent to dumps, swamps and marshes — the natural breeding grounds for mosquitos and other pesky in¬ sects. Consequently, it is not uncommon for bad¬ ly located drive-ins to be repeatedly invaded by all manner of insects, which plague the audiences and quickly turn an evening’s en¬ tertainment into a somewhat harrowing ex¬ perience. Even those customers who prefer to swelter in a closed car to avoid the ubiquitous pests while watching a movie, are not likely to show up again regardless of how popular a picture may be featured. This is why far-sighted theater chains like Loew’s and Walter Reade and hundreds of independents from Maine to Texas and from New Jersey to California have taken positive steps to eliminate this threat to their busi¬ ness by utilizing “fog machines” known as New Du Pont Fluid Cuts Surface Dirt A water-like fluid that possesses the unique property of making a smooth paint surface so slick that dust and dirt cannot cling to it has been successfully field tested for indus¬ trial maintenance, the Du Pont Finishes Divi¬ sion claims. Secret of the new coating is that the mi¬ croscopic pores of a seemingly already smooth surface are filled to produce a slickness so total that there is virtually nothing for dirt to adhere to, it is claimed. Based on colloidal silica, Du Pont Soil Retardant Concentrate is mixed one part with 14 parts water, and sprayed, brushed, roller-coated, mopped, or wiped on a clean interior or exterior painted surface as thinly as possible. Within 15 minutes, a hard, transparent coating has formed that sheds dust and dirt particles deposited from the atmosphere. Smudges remove with unprece¬ dented ease, Du Pont asserts. One quarter of a cent’s worth will coat a square foot, it is said. Armstrong Offers Film A new movie on the quality of low cost tiles is the Armstrong Cork Company’s most recent addition to its selection of 35 films currently available to wholesale and retail flooring firms. The new 23-minute movie, entitled, “Top Level Quality in Low Cost Tile,” describes the built-in practical features of Armstrong’s low cost asphalt and Excelon tiles. It em¬ phasizes the role of employees at Armstrong factories in providing greater quality control which offers increased ease in installation. Produced in black and white and color, the 16mm film is currently available for wholesale distributors for use in providing product information to retailers. TIFA. Some theaters employ professional “foggers” who own TIFA machines, but many others have found it more practical and economical to purchase their own TIFA equipment. Adapted by Todd Shipyards Corporation from the war-time screen generator used to hide battleships, landing craft and troop movements, TIFA is actually an insecticide despenser. It spreads clouds of insecticides in special perfumed fog oils very quickly and economically and in quantities lethal to bugs and insects but harmless to man. More¬ over, the fog dispensed by TIFA is so fine and dry that it does not leave any stains or smears on automobile finishes or windshields, nor does it harm persons who breath it. Besides drive-in theaters, TIFA has been extensively used for many years by ball parks, amusement parks, race tracks, stadi¬ ums, beaches and other outdoor areas to eliminate mosquitos, flies, gnats and other in¬ sects. TIFA has been successfully used for over fifteen years in community health pro¬ grams, by mosquito control commissions and the like. TIFA is available through distributors and dealers in every state of the union and in most overseas countries. TIFA service is also available through “custom foggers” in many localities. The machine is manufactured by the Products Division of Todd Shipyards Corporation.
