Hyer has presented Burton with a daughter, with Jones the only one around to help at the time of birth. Ryan returns to town with his infant and Jones helps to raise him. As the years go by, Burton builds more canneries and war-time buddy Jim Backus acts as his foreman. Rela¬ tions between Burton and Hyer deteriorate when she learns that he and Jones once loved each other. Ryan and Burton are on opposite sides, with the former fighting for Alaska becoming a state and the latter op¬ posed. Burton’s daughter and Ryan’s son elope while Hyer dies of a heart ailment When the boy and girl are about to become parents, they head back to civilization from the Eskimo village. When they are overdue, Burton sets out to find them in his plane while Ryan does the same via dogsled. A bear kills the boy, and a daughter is bom before the mother dies. The granddaughter, Diane McBain, spends time with each of the grandfathers, with Burton still battling Ryan and statehood. He even arranges for lawyer Ray Danton, Backus’ son, to propose to Mc¬ Bain, hoping to get him into politics so that the Burton interests would emerge on top if statehood is granted. Jones shows Danton up and McBain breaks off her engagement. Ryan, flying to Seattle, is injured when the pilot, Sheridan Comerate, has to make a forced landing. Search planes are grounded by the weather but Jones persuades Burton to try and find them which he does. As Alaska is granted statehood, Ryan and Bur¬ ton are no longer bitter antagonists. McBain and Comerate plan on getting married. X-Ray: This Technicolor version of Edna Ferber’s novel of the taming of Alaska is interesting but too long, containing enough material for several films. The on-the-spot filming adds to the effectiveness of the en¬ try, and performances, direction, and produc¬ tion are good. It should do okay given a campaign and enough promotion, while tightening via more scrupulous editing would also be of value. The screenplay is by Harry Kleiner. The use of color is a decided aid.
