Mills is bitterly hurt, realizing that he can never win the loyalty of his men. He kills himself. Guinness is filled with remorse and begins elaborate plans for Mills’ funeral. Other officers realize that the death has affected Guinness’ brain and his mind is wandering. Shielding him to the last, they take him home. X-Ray: A brilliant cast makes this one of the most satisfying dramas a discriminating moviegoer could hope to see. Guinness and Mills are magnificent, and their scenes build with a tension and excitement that is a rare screen occurrence. Other roles are well played as well, and careful direction and colorful production add to the overall effect. The film depends on character development more than plot, but is an engrossing experience all the way. It’s a winner for art and class situations and wherever audiences appreciate fine act¬ ing. It deserves all the promotional help one can give it. The Guinness name, of course, has power in this country as well, and Mills also has a following. The combination is a screen triumph. Screenplay is by James Kennaway. Film Representations (Finnish-made) (English dialogue) Estimate: Interesting import for art spots. Cast: Peter Weckstrom, Tea Ista, Ella Peitsalo, Peter Hyttila, Taure Junttu, Fanny Halonen, Saimi Vuolle, Anton Saini, Eila Roine, Frans Eemil Sillanpaa. Produced by Mauno Makela; directed by Roland af Hallstrom. Story: Farm girl Tea Ista is in love with neighboring farmer Peter Weckstrom. All is well until her cousin Ella Peitsalo, engaged to be married to a clerk in a nearby town, who is much older than she, decides to make a play for Weckstrom. Taking the lead, she seduces Weckstrom and almost wrecks his romance with Ista. However, Peitsalo’s mar¬ riage goes through with her husband none the wiser, and Weckstrom and Ista are left to resume their romance. X-Ray: This simple love story unreels right out in the natural country-side with some of the black and white photography having genuine pastoral beauty. The acting is satisfactory by Finnish standards, we sup¬ pose, and the dubbing is a fairly good job. This was written by Nobel prize winning poet Frans Eemil Sillanpaa, who appears briefly in a prologue which is of no conse¬ quence over here. This most resembles Rus¬ sian-type films of some years ago, but con¬ tains no propaganda. There are several near nude scenes, one of the beautiful leading lady going swimming in a lake, and severffi scenes in the Finnish equivalent of a turkish bath. None of this is objectionable, however. The film holds the interest all the way and can play most art house spots.
