IS A PICTURE W The existence of the U.S.O.S. Seaview, experimental atomic submarine, is revealed to the world as it surfaces near the polar icecap for the first time on its maiden voyage. Admiral Walter Pidgeon, designer, is in charge and the sub is commanded by Captain Robert Sterling. Returning to the surface after a routine dive, sub passengers find the entire sky is on fire. Polar ice is melting in the heat, and the sub rescues civilian scientist Michael Ansara. He is suffering from heat exhaustion and burns as the temperature on earth rises. Reaching Washington by radio, Pidgeon learns that the fire in the sky is the Van Allen Belt of radiation which circles the earth at a distance of 300 miles. It has already raised the temperature on earth to 135 degrees. Planes can't fly, and the sub is ordered to New York. As the sub makes its way to New York, reports on the increasing heat come in via radio and television. Pidgeon and fellow scientists Peter Lorre and John Litel work around the clock searching for the answer to the problem. Nearing New York they have a plan. Pidgeon announces to scientists assembled at the United Nations that the burning belt can be extinguished by firing a missile into it from the submarine. There is considerable argument from other scientists, and Pidgeon is defeated in a voice vote. He returns to the sub. Pidgeon is sure the President will back him up and heads the sub for Brazil, intending to splice into the Rio to London telephone cable and ask Presidential permission to launch the missile. Ansara preaches passive resistance to the crew but assists in the cable*tapping operation. Sterling, Ansara, and youthful crew member Frankie Avalon attempt the undersea job. Sterling is attacked by a giant sawfish, but fires a direct hit in the nick of time with his speargun. He finds the cable and prepares the tap when he is suddenly attacked by a huge squid.
