D. and F. Products Declares Filter Stops “Lens Focus Drift ’ Studies conducted by D. and F. Products Inc., and the now defunct Motion Picture Re¬ search Council, show that poor focus is caused, to some degree, by the radiation of the arc light. This analysis has resulted in the de¬ velopment of a heat-reducing filter designed to combat this problem, generally known as “lens focus drift.” “Heat-on-film,” always a great burden in motion picture projection, became a more acute problem with the advent of wide-screen projection systems and the resultant need for additional light on the screen. D. and F. states that color film, even when completely opaque, will transmit all the infra¬ red to the projection lens. The lens elements, however, do not transmit infrared, which causes them to heat-up considerably. This heating-up of the lens elements effects a change in the lens comparable to that of a change in focal length, and, in turn, causes the picture on the screen to gradually go out of focus. This problem was solved entirely, accord¬ ing to D. and F., with the design of a thick liquid heat filter, having a free opening of 51/2", as shown in the photograph on this page. This 5 V2 " opening will accommodate the beam of any existing arc lamp (mirror or con¬ denser type) as used for either 35 or 70mm projection. The filter consists of two Vycor plates with a liquid between them and has an outer hol¬ low rim for the circulation of cooling water either from a recirculator or from tap water. By absorbing the long wave infrared, which undesirably heats up the lens elements, D. and F. says this filter eliminates lens focus drift entirely; and its shallow construction and wide opening has no effect on the light dis¬ tribution and does not change the illumina¬ tion system of the lamphouse. According to D. and F., tests and measure¬ ments in the field have shown that the tem¬ perature in the center of a projector apperture is as high as 1600 degrees fahrenheit and that the liquid heat filter will reduce this temperature by 40 percent or more. The Liquid Heat Reducing Filter is also available with an additional heat-reflecting coating on the Vycor plate next to the film. This dichroic coating can be added to absorb the short wave infrared heat, protecting and preventing the buckling of black-and-white film. The manufacturer says since this dichroic filter is constantly cooled, it will last indefiitely and will not deteriorate as do heat-deflecting plates placed in the light beam inside the lamphouse, where no cooling can be provided. According to D. and F., one of the most im¬ portant advantages of the above filter is the ability to cool the filtering liquid. They note that this is not the case with ordinary water cells often used for similar purposes. They say the hollow rim permits cooling the liquid around the cell, increasing the useability of this particular Heat Reducing Filter far be¬ yond the limitations of water cell types. The D. and F. "Miss America" Dispenser Introduced by Pepsi-Cola Pepsi-Cola Company’s new “Miss America” fountain dispenser, an illuminated, threedrink high-impact plastic ice unit, was in¬ troduced to Pepsi bottlers at the Fifteenth Annual Pepsi Cola Bottlers Association Con¬ vention, San Francisco. The new Pepsi foun¬ tain sales unit, available now, was unveiled by Maria Beale Fletcher, Miss America 1962. Its market¬ ing program has been planned to take maxi¬ mum advantage of the year-round publicity and promotional values accruing Pepsi-Cola bottlers through the company’s long-time association with the Miss America Pageant at national, state and local levels. Stressing the importance of the fountain sales market in Pepsi’s Total-Marketing-Con¬ cept, Vice-President John E. Repko, director of syrup sales operations, Pepsi-Cola, pointed out that this year the American public will spend over $400 million for fountain drinks at over 150,000 fountain sales locations, each one a potential “Miss America” dispenser out¬ let. Versatility and colorful appeal are two im¬ portant features of the three-drink dispenser which will serve Pepsi, Teem and Patio. The unit is available for island, counter or rail base placement and can be used with a stand¬ ard as well as illuminated face plate. Face plates carry the easy-to-read and eye-arrest¬ ing “Have A Pepsi” legend. A special pressurized system design inno¬ vation makes possible the use of syrup trans¬ fer tanks, thus affording ease of handling and increased inventories of syrup. Other in¬ novations and improvements include greater cooling capacity than single drink dispensers. Dimensions of the unit are 9%" wide, 19%" long and 18V2" high.
