hero but could not live up to it, even after an attempt was made to make him realize that he was only the symbol of a hero. “Cape Fear” is a stark drama starring Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, Polly Bergen and co-starring Lori Martin, Martin Balsam, Jack Kruschen, Telly Savalas and Barrie Chase. Based on the novel “The Executioners” by John D. MacDonald it was directed by J. Lee Thompson who directed “The Guns of Navarone.” It was produced by Sy Bartlett from a screenplay by James Webb. It will probably be released starting in May. Tentatively scheduled for June is “Lonely Are the Brave,” previously titled “The Last Hero.” This is a dramatic and unusual story starring Kirk Douglas, Gena Rowlands and Michael Kane. It was produced by Edward Lewis and directed by David Miller in Panavision. Cary Grant, Doris Day, Gig Young and Audrey Meadows are starred in “That Touch of Mink,” in color and Panavision, another new romantic comedy by Stanley Shapiro — this time written with Nate Monaster. Shapiro again served as co-producer with Martin Melcher, and Robert Arthur was again executive producer. This will probably open in late June or early July and will be very much around in September. Among other things it features a sequence involving the New York Yankees with its stars Roger Maris, Mickey Mantel and Yogi Berra. “The Spiral Road,” also in co1qi\ stars Rock Hudson, Burl Ives, and Gena Rowlands. Based on the best-selling novel by Jan de Hartog, it was produced by Robert Arthur and was di¬ rected by Robert Mulligan. It is a drama set in the Far East with its background being Java in 1936. It will probably open in August. John Huston’s production of “Freud” which is currently shooting in Munich is, of course, the story of the early years of the worldfamous founder of psychoanalysis. Starred are Montgomery Clift, Susanah York, Larry Parks, and Susan Kohner. Huston is serving as his producer and director with Wolfgang Reinhardt as co-producer. No release plan has as yet been made on this picture but it could come within the calendar year 1962. Hammer Productions has already started production on “The Phantom of the Opera,” a color remake of the famous chiller, this time starring Herbert Lorn and Heather Sears. Being made in the same lavish vein as the other horror classics made by Hammer for Universal, this carries a production budget of over a million dollars. “The Day the Earth Caught Fire,” which Universal acquired from its British producers, for domestic distribution is a highly unusual and dramatic film that carries a striking note of conviction in what could happen if Russia and the United States were both to explode a 50 megaton bomb at the same time. In the picture, Earth is dislodged from its axis caus¬ ing widespread climatic disturbances. It is then discovered that Earth has also been deflected from its natural orbit and is moving toward the sun. In these days of preoccupation with thermonuclear explosions and radioactive fall¬ out, “The Day the Earth Caught Fire,” pre¬ senting another possibility of danger in nu¬ clear testing, is a thoughtful and exciting drama. No special release month has yet been assigned to this picture. Then of course there will be the regular release of “Spartacus,” the widely-hailed Bryna Production and winner of four Acad¬ emy Awards which stars Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, John Gavin and Tony Curtis. This is scheduled to start in Feb¬ ruary, and will be around for a long time after that. Kirk Douglas talks with Gena Rowlands in Cary Grant and Doris Day are shown here as this still from Universal's "Lonely Are the they appear in a scene from Universal Pictures' Brave." "That Touch of Mink." Gregory Peck and Polly Bergen, as they appear in the Universal production, "Cape Fear," a stark drama based on the novel "The Executioners" by John D. MacDonald. Robert Mitchum also appears in this film directed by J. Lee Thompson. Shoes in hand. Rock Hudson chases after Doris Day in this scene from Universal's romantic comedy, "Lover Come Back." On the right is Tony Curtis as the Pima Indian who participated in the Iwo Jima flag-raising. Scene is from Universal's "The Outsider." December 20, 1961 MOTION PICTURE EXHIBITOR 17
