A special promotion to find a Miami “VIP girl is a honey of an idea to get our campaign off to a bang-up start. In the picture, Eclie Adams plays the VIP girl, so the contest to find the local VIP girl. Our search for Miami’s VIP girl ties in with U-I’s national VIP girl contest. Rather than use a newspaper, we were able to tie in with a tv station, ABC-WLBW, chan¬ nel 10, Miami. The contest idea in brief— girl must be 18 to 25, single, Vivacious, Interesting with Personality. Local girl must submit by mail a photo, full length, giving name, address, phone, age, and ambition— be it model, actress, career girl, housewife, etc. Local tv station has a 10 clay promotion for girls using the teaser part of the tv trailers on Eclie Adams, and adding a taped pitch about the contest with Bill Wyler. The finalist will be selected on his live two hour show on Eeb. 1. The local winner will receive a three day round trip cruise to Nassau, in addition to her competing in the national finals of the VIP girl that will be held at the Montmartre Hotel, Miami Beach, on Eeb. 7. National winners will be flown in for this event. There is considerable activity planned for these THiS AD is one of the colorful offerings from the pressbook favored by our author. The tv station made up a series of four spots, 60 and 20 seconds, for promotion purposes. For the first four days, the station is using five spots a day. That last five days, and then they are stepping it up to 10. The national finals on Miss VIP will be covered by tv, U-I Newsreel, radio, and press. Local candid camera bugs are urged to attend the poolside event through radio, press, and news breaks. Radio station WQAM, Miami, is also searching for Miami’s VIP girl. They desired to conduct their own contest, requesting photos, etc., to be sent to the station. They are using spots around the clock in their search. This is an excellent promotion, it can be changed around to fit any situation, with a newspaper, radio, or tv station handling it on the local level. For a Mr. VIP promotion, we tied in with greater Miami’s millionth resident contest, the winner of which will be an¬ nounced via press, radio, and tv on Feb. 1., the beginning day of a month long community celebration. Some of the high¬ lights of the celebration will be for this VIP to officiate at many special events. He will be a judge in the national Miss VIP contest on Feb. 7. At the Torch of Friendship, downtown Bayfront Park, Miami Mayor Robert King High will welcome Tony Randall, along with all the national VIP girl contestants. The mayor is to give Tony the key to the city of Miami. Tony in turn will give the mayor a gold engraved card making him a charter member of the VIP CLUB of AMERICA, as the top very important person in Miami. A framed certificate will accompany the lifetime card membership. Tony will also present gold card #2 to the millionth resident. This event, as all others, will be covered by press, radio-TV, and U-I News¬ reel, also both news bureaus of Miami and Miami Beach. This VIP CLUB stunt can also be done in any situation. It ties in with the picture very well, and is perfect for publicity breaks. Exhibitors may contact U-I for particulars on gold cards and certificates if interested. Appearance of Tony Randall in Miami will cover two days of activities. He will make PA’s at the theatres on premiere night, accompanied by the VIP girls. Special Hollywood open¬ ing activities are scheduled for the Beach Theatre— lights, stars, entertainers, music, radio broadcast, VIP girls, and ex¬ citement. Special newspaper color section will be published by the Miami Beach Sun. A special front and back cover will be printed on goldenrod color paper in two colors, red and black. This section will cover all events and activities of the premiere. Merchant approval for special window displays has been arranged. Fashion distributors will tie in with special window displays and special newspaper ads on fashions, tieing in the premiere. Columbia record distributor has set 10 window displays on music from the picture, special 22x28 cards made up for tiein. Distributor used plenty of 8x10 stills in the displays. This promo is mentioned on page 8 in the press book. Jordon Marsh Co. agreed to a fashion tiein with their store promo¬ tion on “Flicker Fashions.”’ They have requested fashion art, posters for window displays, and we are supplying them with NSS special 40x60s. Our window tiein promotions suggested in the press go from sports to convertibles. Don’t overlook the special art stills— check on the possibility of a fashion show with a leading department store for in store or theatre fashion activity. Gold medal paperback hook distributor is posting 300 coun¬ ter display cards, plug using 200 special diecut rack cards in promoting the book. Cards are imprinted with playdates and theatres. Radio stations WCKB and WKAT in Miami will do a musi¬ cal song salute to Doris Day, playing her favorite hit tunes 18 MOTION PICTURE EXHIBITOR February 7, 1962
