The Universal Golden Anniversary is being marked by a year-long series of events which started on Jan. 1 and will continue through Dec. 31, with the first 26 weeks being desig¬ nated as a worldwide Presidential Sales Drive period honoring Universal president Milton R. Rackmil. According to reports being compiled by Henry H. “Hi” Martin, vice-president and general sales manager. Universal pictures will be on the screens of 14,950 theatres in the United States and 1,242 theatres in Canada, out of a total of 12,291 regular theatres in the U.S. and 4,700 drive-ins and out of Canada’s 1,459 theatres playing films both in English and French. According to Universal’s compila¬ tions, there are normally only 10,599 “possi¬ bilities” for normal exhibition in the United States and 745 in Canada. Americo Aboaf, vice-president of Universal International Films, Inc., the Company’s for¬ eign sales subsidiary, says Universal’s pictures will be on the screens of 30,000 theatres throughout the rest of the world with the exception of those behind the Iron Curtain. To mark its Golden Anniversary, Universal has assembled one of the strongest line-ups of important box office attractions in its 50 year history for release both in the domestic and in the foreign markets in honor of Rackmil, under whose leadership Universal has reached its greatest financial and artistic suc¬ cess. Scheduled for release during the second half of the anniversary year are “That Touch of Mink,” “The Spiral Road,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” and “If A Man Answers.” The impetus of the Golden Anniversary Year continues in the current production activities with five pictures before the cam¬ eras and in final stages of production includ¬ ing “The Ugly American” starring Marlon Brando; “To Kill A Mockingbird” based on the Harper Lee Pulitzer Prize novel and star¬ ring Gregory Peck; “If A Man Answers” star¬ ring Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin; “Forty Pounds of Trouble” starring Tony Curtis and Phil Silvers; and John Huston’s production of “Freud.” Scheduled to follow later in the year are “A Gathering of Eagles,” starring Pock Hudson; and “The Thrill of It All,” starring Doris Day and James Garner, all for release in late 1962 and early 1963.
