Created and directed by Federico Fellini; an Angelo Rizzoli Presentation. Story: Giulietta Masina is a plain woman married to Mario Pisu, to whom she is a de¬ voted wife. They reside amidst the pine trees of Fregene and could be classified as upper middle class. She is visited by her glamorous mother, Caterina Boratto, and her two equally glamorous sisters, Luisa della Noce and Sylva Koscina, who frequently reproach her for her simplicity and plainness. She loves her hus¬ band and believes that he is still as much in love with her as when they were married. She accepts his romantic indifference with the excuse that he is tired after a hard day at the office. Actually, he is tired of Masina and has been seeking romance elsewhere. Gradu¬ ally, she begins to doubt his fidelity and love, and she begins to withdraw into a world of unreality, reliving parts of her childhood. She also lets some of her weird friends drag her to some spiritual sessions, and her imagination begins to play tricks on her. Spirits start to “visit” her. Masina even becomes acquainted with neighbor Sandra Milo, who lives only for sex and love, with parties going on at all hours. She invites Masina to partake of the fun and pleasure. Masina tries but her basic honesty won’t permit it. She and her sister hire a private detective agency to follow Pisu, and they provide the wanted proof in the way of photos, recordings, etc. She tries to have it out with the other woman but gives up after an all-day wait. She returns home to find Pisu packed and ready to go off on a trip, knowing it will be with her rival. She doesn’t try to hold him. During the night, she con¬ templates suicide, but then she decides to carry on. She rids herself of the “spirits” around her, greeting the new day with hope and even a desire for life. X-Ray: Basically, what is to be found here is a simple drama of a plain married woman devoted to her middle-aged husband, whose attentions begin to wander. She wants to save their marriage but is unsure how to pro¬ ceed. She lets friends and her imagination bring in all kinds of imaginative vapors that take varying shapes and forms. The latter fol-de-rol is by now a trademark of the notecl director, Federico Fellini, and he has quite an inventive mind with the frothy window dressing, proving a major conversation piece. There are near-nude women, suggestions of orgies, frightening bits and pieces, etc. The use of color here seems an invaluable asset, helping to capture attention of viewers and creating an impressive aura about the release. Long it is, but perhaps Fellini felt better this way than to sacrifice any of his bits of busi¬ ness that over-emphasize the simpleness of his heroine. Performances are very good, and direction and production are fine and defin¬ itely unusual. Of course, the entry in its present form is suitable for the art and spe¬ cialty spots and for adult audiences only. The screenplay is by Fellini, Tullio Pinelli, Ennio Flaiano, and Brunello Rondi, based on an original story by Fellini and Pinelli.
