168 FEATURES LISTED FOR THEATRE TIEUPS IN "NATIONAL BOOK WEEK"
The attention of motion picture theatre owners again is directed, for the 1 5th year, to "National Book Week," now underway. In this connection the National Board of Review has made available, for use in arranging programs that lend themselves to book tieups, an annual compilation of "Selected Book-Films," prepared in conjunction with the "Book Week" movement that is sponsored by the National Association of Book Publishers.
The manner and method of effecting tieups with book stores, schools, libraries and the like are well known to most exhibitors, these exploitation mediums usually lending aid readily in furthering interest in well known books, either new or old.
All films selected by the Review Committees of the National Board from September, 1 935, to October, 1 936, which had their source in novels or published plays and stories are included in the compilation, and in addition films having special book tie-up values, though not adaptations, are recorded.
The compilation contains films taken from 74 novels, 70 from published plays and stories, 1 2 having special book tie-up possibilities, and another 1 2 foreign-language book-films. This list provides not only information for immediate activity with book-film programs, but also future use in exploitation arrangements uniting library, theatre, school and club interests.
Among outstanding book-film releases during the year were "Anthony Adverse," "Dodsworth," "Magnificent Obsession," "Mutiny on the Bounty," "Tale of Two Cities," "Three Musketeers," "Show Boat," "Little Lord Fauntleroy," "Trail of the Lonesome Pine," "San Francisco," "Green Pastures," "Midsummer Night's Dream," "Romeo and Juliet."
The order of arrangement is: picture title, source title if different, names of author and company. The symbols preceding the title indicate audience classification: "f" for the family audience, 1 2 years and up; "m" for the mature audience, 1 8 years and up; "j" for the juvenile audience under 1 2 years; and "*" especially interesting or well done:
