EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND TAXES
"In other foreign markets, too, American films must continue to thread their way through a maze of trade restrictions, tariffs, embargoes, quotas, import licenses, exchange controls and numerous other devices for preventing imports.
"Duties and import taxes have been raised in the Argentine, Australia, Bolivia and England. Quota restrictions have been increased in Estonia, the Italian Africa Colony and Japan. New quota laws have been passed in Australia, Brazil, Greece, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland. New interior taxes have been adopted in
Algeria, the Argentine, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, England, India, Siam and Spain.
"It is fortunate that our Government has recognized the importance of our films not only as a part of our total exports, but as the messengers of American commerce everywhere. As a result of the trade agreements concluded by the State Department, our industry has been definitely and favorably affected by the opportunities to negotiate against exactions, barriers and restraints in certain countries."
— From the annual report of WILL H. HAYS, president, to the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc., on March 25th.
