March 30, 1940 MOTION PICTURE HERALD 33 Charlie Ruggles steals the last sequence with his dogs and inimitable tomfoolery.— L. A. Irwin, Palace Theatre, Penacook, N. H. General patronage. !{ WAY BACK WHEN A TRIANGLE HAD ITS POINTS: Stone Age Cartoon — Good cartoon in black tjand white. Running time, seven minutes. — E. M. iFreiburger, Paramount Theatre, Dewey, Okla. Small town patronage. WILLIAM TELL: Symphonic Series— These symphony orchestra reels go over very well with most of my patrons, although they don't seem to do so ; with yours. This one maintains their high average '■of excellence. Running time, 10 minutes. — W. Varick Kevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. Small college town and rural patronage. RKO Radio BANDITS AND BULLETS: Ray Whitley Comedies — Very good. Western plot in miniature with topnotch western music by Ray and his Six Bar Cowboys. — L. A. Irwin, Palace Theatre Penacook, N. H. General patronage. J CUPID RIDES THE RANGE: Ray Whitley Comedies— Quite good. Ray's music is smooth. — L. A. Trwin, Palace Theatre, Penacook, N. H. General ! patronage. MARCH OF TIME, NO. 7: Vatican of Pius XII This is the subject concerning the Vatican and the Pope. It is well done and naturally should be tied 1 up with Catholic Churches. My audience, most _ of which are non-Catholic, commented upon how in ,teresting it was to them. I doubt if it drew any ■extra business here, however. Running time, 18 min utes.— W. Varick Nevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, 1 Alfred, N. Y. Small college town and rural patronage. SKY GAME: RKO Fathe Sportscope— Duck hunting retl that pleased the two or three hunters in the audience. This reel gave me the impression that [shooting ducks is far from being sportsmanlike. How jjibout a reel from the duck's point of view? That jlwould at least have some chance of being different. Munning time, 10 minutes. — W. Varick Nevins, HI, J Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. Small college | town and rural patronage. Twentieth Century-Fox ■ HARVEST TIME: Terry-Toons— Although not too original in plot, this towers so far over all others in this series of color cartoons that it is well worth ,'playing. Running time, seven minutes. — W. Varick pevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. jSmall college town and rural patronage. 1! ORPHAN DUCK, THE: Terry-Toons— At last! A good color cartoon from this company. Running time, eight minutes. — A. C. Stock, Iroquois Theatre, Petrolia, 'Ontario, Canada. Small town patronage. TWO HEADED GIANT: Terry-Toons — A fairish short of a color cartoon. It certainly doesn't prove that two heads are better than one. Running time. J seven minutes. — W. Varick Nevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. Small college town and rural jpatronage. WHAT EVERY INVENTOR SHOULD KNOW: Lew Lehr — Pretty good, although we did not think it 'was quite as good as others in this series. I though Lehr was quite difficult to understand in this subject but it may have been just a case of poor recording or printing. It got some laughs, which is what counts. Running time, 10 minutes. — H. Williams, Stockton Theatre, Stockton, 111. Small town and rural patronage. WICKY-WACKY ROMANCE, A: Terry-ToonsVery amusing. Several belly laughs! — L. A. Irwin, jVPalace Theatre, Penacook, N. H. General patronage. ^Universal || \ SCRAMBLED EGGS: Lantz Colored Cartoons— Very I jood. — L. A. Irwin, Palace Theatre, Penacook, N. H. -General patronage. j STRANGER THAN FICTION: No. 69— This series :|s always good and you make no mistake in running hem. Running time, eight minutes. — A. J. Inks, ! Crystal Theatre, Ligonier, Ind. Small town patronage. 'I LIFE BEGINS FOR ANDY PANDY: Lantz Colored ' -artoons — Here is the start of a good series and don't orget it. If the balance is as good as this, Universal .really has something. Running time, eight minutes. — A. J. Inks, Crystal Theatre, Ligonier, Ind. Small | own patronage. Vitaphone AFRICA SQUEAKS: Loony Tunes— This is a good "lack and white cartoon of the "gag" type that ichlesinger specializes in. He is in rare form in lins one. It would be very, very appropriate to play mis with "That's Right. You're Wrong" or "Stanley nd Livingstone" as Kay Kyser and Stanley are eatured in it. Running time, eight minutes. — W. anck Nevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, I. Y. Small college town and rural patronage. CURIOUS PUPPY, THE: Merrie Melodies— This is one of the funniest colored cartoons we have shown this season. Running time, eight minutes. — A. C. Stock, Iroquois Theatre, Petrolia, Ontario, Canada. Small town patronage. EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM: Merrie Melodies— Very good cartoon in color. — E. M. Freiburger, Paramount Theatre, Dewey, Okla. Small town patronage. FRANCES CARROLL AND THE COQUETTES: Melody Masters — Three minutes of a drum solo is enough to tell you how poor this band reel is. Bad, very bad. Running time, eight minutes. — A. J. Inks, Crystal Theatre, Ligonier, Ind. Small town patronage. GOOD EGG, THE: Merrie Melodies— OK but not up to the usual Schlesinger standard of originality. The ugly duckling is a turtle this time. Running time, eight minutes. — W. Varick Nevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. Small college town and rural patronage. ICE FROLIC: Broadway Brevities— Very good subject which makes you realize that Sonja Henie isn't the only figure skater in the world. Our patrons complimented us on this short, which is rather unusual in this spot. Running time, 20 minutes.— H. Williams, Stockton, Theatre, Stockton, 111. Small town and rural patronage. MIGHTY HUNTERS: Merrie Melodies— This stars the Canyon Kiddies of Good Housekeeping fame. It might mean something to advertise it. I hope they make more of these as a new series of color cartoons, as this is very cute, pretty, unusual and funny. What more could one want. Running time, eight minutes. — W. Varick Nevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. Small college town and rural patronage. OLD HICKORY: Historical Technicolor Featurettes — They certainly put fine production into these historical shorts. This one is very fast moving with more action than usual. The color is perfect. My crowd often thinks these are second features as there is so much material in them. Play it on a patriotic day if possible. Running time, 17 minutes.— W. Varick Nevins, III, Alfred Co-Op Theatre, Alfred, N. Y. Small college town and rural patronage. ONE DAY STAND: Vitaphone Varieties— Very good reel on the circus life. Enjoyed by the grownups as well as the kiddies. Running time, one reel.— A. L. Dove, Bengough Theatre, Bengough, Saskatchewan, Canada. Rural and small town patronage. REMEMBER WHEN: Broadway Brevities— A very good subject which the older patrons will enjoy thor SECTIONS: Holiday and Date Record • Film Clearance Chart • Insurance Record • Equipment Purchase Record • Fixed Expense Apportionment • Income (Ticket Numbers, Prices, Cash, Taxes, Costs of Features, Shorts) • Payroll and Check Record, Bank Record, Social Security Tax Deductions by Individual and complete listing of all expenses • Profit and Loss, weekly and cumulative • Summary Sheet • Contract Record for each exchange oughly. Have to give credit to Vitaphone for a considerably good lineup of short subjects and would say they are second only to MGM in this respect. Running time, 20 minutes. — H. Williams, Stockton Theatre, Stockton, 111. Small town and rural patronage. ROYAL RODEO, THE: John Payne, Cliff Edwards — A very good color short subject. Running time, 13 minutes. — A. C. Stock, Iroquois Theatre, Petrolia, Ontario, Canada. Small town patronage. SLAPSIE MAXIE: Broadway Brevities— A very, very poor comedy. — Leon C. Bolduc, Majestic Theatre, Conway, N. H. General patronage. VAUDEVILLE INTERLUDE: Vitaphone Varieties — for our situation it was the answer. Real entertainment. Many good comments. — Harland Rankin, Plaza Theatre, Tilbury, Ontario, Canada. Miscellaneous LOUIS-GODOY FIGHT FILM: Did us extra business although fights are hard to get that draw. — Harland Rankin, Plaza Theatre, Tilbury, Ontario, Canada. Serials Republic DRUMS OF FU MANCHU: Henry Brandon, Luana Walters — First chapter looks good. Plenty of action.— Charles F. Dearman, Fox Theatre, Smithville, Tenn. Rural and small town patronage. ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION: Reed Hadley— Fell below Republic's standard in our opinion. We don't like the idea of one chapter of these serials being a review of past episodes. It isn't interesting to patrons and they think they should see something new. — Charles F. Dearman, Fox Theatre, Smithville, Tenn. Rural and small town patronage. Jolley in New Post B. E.
