36 MOTION PICTURE HERALD July 13, 1940 ► LIGHTING FLUORESCENT ► CARPETING a C. M. CUTLER and H. J. CHANON . . . . . . in the second of three articles on the application of "black light" to the theatre, will present specific suggestions as to equipment arrangements for the effective illumination of fluorescent carpeting, woven floor covering which glows colorfully "in the dark" under the action of near-ultraviolet light. Messrs. Cutler and Chanon, lighting engineers on the staff of the Nela Park Engineering Division of the General Electric Company, are intimately acquainted with the practical problems of the theatre. Look for their article on this new tool of showmanship — in the July 27th issue of (.Continued on following page) picture. Running time, 67 minutes. Played June 9-10. —Ray Peacock, Qnalaska Theatre, Onalaska, Wash. Loggers and mill workers patronage. JOHNNY APOLLO: Tyrone Power, Dorothy Lamour, Edward Arnold, Lloyd Nolan — Good picture to good business. Running time, 93 minutes. — Ray Peacock, Onalaska Theatre, Onalaska, Wash. Loggers and mill workers patronage. JOHNNY APOLLO-: Tyrone Power, Dorothy Lamour, Edward Arnold, Lloyd Nolan — Fair to poor. Not up to ability of cast at all. Took very bad beating on this. So far only three of Fox's big pictures have done business for me and I've played twelve. Running time, 93 minutes. — A. E. Eliasen, Rialto Theatre, Paynesville, Minn. Rural and small town patronage. STAR DUST: Linda Darnell, John Payne, Roland Young, Charlotte Greenwood — Feature pleased. Patrons seemed to get in the mood of this show from the start. Free carnival in next town hurt business on this. Running time, 85 minutes. — A. E. Eliasen, Rialto Theatre, Paynesville, Minn. Rural and small town patronage. 20,000 MEN A YEAR: Randolph Scott, Preston Foster, Margaret Lindsay — Could not get them in the second night on this. The shorts had to put it over. No good. Running time, 84 minutes. — E. C. Bohlig, Opheim Theatre, Opheim, Mont. Small town patronage. RETURN OF THE CISCO KID, THE: Warner Baxter, Lynn Bari, Henry Hull, Cesar Romero — Very good picture. Not the draw some westerns are. Business only fair. — Harland Rankin, Plaza Theatre, Tilbury, Ontario, Canada. General patronage. United Artists HOUSE ACROSS THE BAY: Joan Bennett, George Raft, Lloyd Nolan, Gladys George, Walter Pidgeon— Miss Bennett was excellent; Nolan, Pidgeon and Raft perform in adequate standard fashion and were also excellent. The plot is enthralling and alluring and the picture is very entertaining and will please the usual theatregoers but had Raft recovered his freedom and his girl, the taste in the mouths of the audience would have been much sweeter. The picture starts off with excellent, well pleased patronage and good for a second week at one of the neighborhood houses. Running time, 107 minutes. Played June 20-26.— William Noble, Criterion Theatre, Oklahoma City, Okla. General patronage. MAN IN THE IRON MASK, THE: Louis Hayward, Joan Bennett, Alan Hale, Joseph Schildkraut, Warren William — Very good production, although not a very late production. Went over in a big way here. Running time, 109 minutes. Played June 8-9. — F. G. Mills, Director of Motion Pictures, Prison Theatre, Florida State Prison, Raifrod, Fla. Prison patronage. OF MICE AND MEN: Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney, Jr., Betty Field — Very well liked and fairly good business. Lon Chaney, Jr., should rate same consideration for some award for the difficult role he played so wonderful in this. Running time, 107 minutes.—A. E. Eliasen, Rialto Theatre, Paynesville, Minn. Rural and small town patronage. Universal LA CONGA NIGHTS: Hugh Herbert, Dennis O'Keefe, Constance Moore — Here's another dandy comedy from Universal and well made with a peach of a cast. Hugh Herbert is one of the funniest men I have ever seen (in character) and the public starts laughing the minute he appears on the screen. From then on they relax with that knowing smile that they are going to enjoy themselves and the picture doesn't let them down for a minute. Let's see more like this. Running time, 60 minutes. Played June 15-18.— Stanley Lambert, Rialto Theatre, Racine, Wis. General patronage. NEWSBOYS* HOME: Jackie Cooper, Wendy Barrie, Edmund Lowe, "Little Tough Guys"— Strictly a boy's (or young man's) picture. The picture generally was good but some spots were rather dramatic for our "patronage." Running time, 82 minutes. Played June 15-16. — F. G. Mills, Director of Motion Pictures, Prison Theatre, Florida State Prison, Raiford, Fla. Prison patronage. ZANZIBAR: Lola Lane, James Craig— Played this little piece of hokum on a week-end for our action fans with excellent results. If your audience is not over critical, this would be a honey. Plenty of animals for the kids and action for the adults. Running time, 61 minutes.— A. J. Inks, Crystal Theatre, Ligomer, Ind. Small town patronage. Warner Brothers BROTHER ORCHID: Edward G. Robinson, Ann Sothern, Ralph Bellamy, Humphrey Bogart— Good picture and good business. This gangster picture has a iot of comedy. Running time, 91 minutes. Played June 23-24.— E. M. Freiburger, Paramount Theatre, Dewey, Okla. Small town patronage. GAMBLING ON THE HIGH SEAS: Wayne Morris, Jane Wyman, John Litel— Fair action show but didn't seem to satisfy my action patrons. Is good enough for double feature program. Running time, 60 minutes.
