July 3 , 1943 MANAGERS' R MATLACK W QUARTER QUI' The Female Contingent Earns Its Laurels as Scroll Winners Jack Matlack at the J.J. Parker Broadway theatre, in Portland, Ore., takes down top honors in the Second Quarter of the Judging and thus becomes the winner of the Quigley Awards Plaque for that period. Round Tablers will doubtless recall that Matlack last year was voted tops in the Quigley War Showmanship competitions, having earned his spurs for his outstanding work while at the Hunt Theatres, in Medford, Ore. Women Again Merit Recognition The following contestants for the Quigley Awards were voted Scrolls of Honor by the Judges for the excellence of their promotions in the Second Quarter: Vincent Aldert, Paramount theatre, Brattleboro, Vt. Gertrude Bunchez, Loew's Century theatre, Baltimore, Md. William Galligan, Commercial theatre, Chicago, III. Arthur Groom, Loew's State, Memphis, Tenn. James King, Keith's Boston, Boston, Mass. Louis Mayer, Palace theatre, Cleveland, Ohio. Rita Morton, RKO Albee, Providence, R. I. Of interest to the judges was the excellent job done by the women this quarter, particularly noteworthy being the material submitted by Gertrude Bunchez at the Century theatre, in Baltimore, Md., Rita Morton at the RKO Albee, in Providence, R. I., and Mollie Stickles at the Poli Strand, in Waterbury, Conn. Miss Stickles, incidentally, was the first woman to have won a Quigley Awards Plaque, having accomplished this in the First Quarter of the 1943 Competitions. The judges for the Second Quarter were: David A. Lipton, Advertising and Publicity Director for Columbia Pictures; Lou Preston, Interboro Circuit, Brooklyn, N. Y., and Harry Mandel, Advertising and Publicity Director for RKO Theatres. The material of these seven runners-up, together with that of Jack Matlack's, will be among those considered for the Grand Awards competition. All of their material submitted for the balance of this year will be entered for the Grand Awards and considered at that time. David i Pictures' vertising in the Secc Second Quarter ^ifat*w.
