July 24, I 943 BETTER THEATRES 89 arm rests and backs for protection of the surfaces. SOILED OR TORN FABRICS Upholstery fabric is soiled or torn : To clean use only warm water and mild soap, drying the surface with a clean dry cloth. Never use harsh cleaning fluids. Do not wash simulated leather too often as the surface may crack, but a little of a good grade of wax can be applied for protection. Any torn parts should be repaired immediately and completely, be it a back or seat. If the material is available and on hand, as patching piece-meal can never produce a lasting job. LOOSE ANCHOR BOLTS To remedy anchor bolts that are loose due to the use of quick setting patented cement or regular cement with the hole too large : If the hole is reasonably small and the concrete tough, melted lead can be poured, if possible, which will give a good permanent job. In some cases, the insertion of proper expansion bolts or long toggle bolts will fasten the standards solidly in place. ITEM 29: Aisle Lights These lights give no trouble as a rule if properly installed and maintained ; however, they do give trouble occasionally, especially if the chair standards are loose, the outlets in the floors are improperly located, the BX and wiring too short, or the wiring defective or wrongly connected, which can cause a fire. Always make sure that there is no undue strain on the electrical connection at the chair standard. Also make certain the proper fuses are in the panel-box and that all insulation is in good condition. ITEM 30: Hearing Aids When hearing aids are used, they should be checked and serviced regularly as a faulty or "dead" phone is just as useful as no phone at all. Common faults of hearing aids are : The plug-in box at the chair standard is loose. The brackets are loose or are improperly fastened to the standard. Improper fastening brackets and screws that are of the wrong type, or the threads are sheared and the heads burred. The wiring connections are loose or entirely ripped off the jack-box. The wiring and BX conduit are rigidly fastened from the floor to the box on the standard so that any movement of the chair tends to strain or entirely rip off the connections. The plug-in jack prongs are corroded, of the wrong type, or are loose in the fittings. The signal circuit wiring is improperly shielded, of the wrong size or spliced loosely and otherwise defective. The wiring to the various jack-boxes is tapped and paralleled improperly. In repairing the jacks and boxes at the chair standards, the house or local electrician should be able to do the work. HELPING America forget its cares for regular hours of well-earned relaxation is your job — and you're doing it splendidly. But there's another job that simple business foresight tells you you ought to be doing for yourself. That's putting aside your regular funds for equipment-replacement— remodeling, re-decorating and re-seating your theatres. Smart theatre operators are buying United States War Bonds with this idle money. They'll be "sitting pretty" when Victory and Peace make it possible to repair the ravages of heavy wartime usage in their houses. American Seating Company, busy on urgent war assignments, offers this earnest advice: PUT YOUR REPLACEMENT DOLLARS IN UNITED STATES WAR BONDS!
