4TH QUARTER QUICLEY AWARD PLAQUE WON BY LICE BRIEN Winner of Grand Award in 1939 Wins New Prestige and Silver Plaque Lige Brien, manager of a neighborhood Warner theatre in Pittsburgh, won top honors in the fourth quarter competition of the Quigley Awards excelling the country's leading theatre men in showmanship during the past three months. The following contestants for the Quigley Awards, listed alphabetically, were voted Scrolls of Honor by the Judges for the excellence of their promotions in the Fourth Quarter: Arnold J. Coffey, Carolina theatre. Hickory, N. C. Edgar Goth, Fabian Theatres, Stapleton, S. I. James King, RKO Boston, Boston, Mass. Jack Matlack, Broadway theatre, Portland, Ore. Rita Morton, RKO Albee, Providence, R. I. Chuck Shannon, Columbia theatre, Sharon, Pa. Charles B. Taylor, Shea's Theatres, Buffalo, N. Y. Mr. Brien's consistency of effort and outstanding promotional activities earned him the Silver Plaque after the Judges had voted him into first place over Jack Matlack and James J. King, both close contenders and both winners of similar awards made during previous quarters this year. During the third quarter period Mr. Brien was awarded a Scroll of Honor. In 1939 he won the Quigley Grand Award. About six months ago he was transferred by the Warner Circuit from the Belmar theatre in Pittsburgh to the Enright, where he has indicated sustained promotional activity. Small Town Theatremen Among Scroll of Honor Winners Subsequent-run and small town operation were exceptionally well represented in the final quarter competition with Arnold Coffey, manager of the Carolina theatre, Hickory, N. C, and Chuck Shannon, manager of the Columbia, Sharon, Pa., sharing additional top honors with Mr. Brien. Five additional awards of Scrolls of Honors were made to Jack Matlack, J. J. Parker's Broadway theatre, Portland, Ore. ; Charles B. Taylor, Shea's theatres, Buffalo, N. Y.; Rita Morton, RKO Albee, Providence, R. I.; James King, RKO theatres, Boston, Mass.; and Edgar Goth, Fabian theatres, Stapleton, N. Y. Special consideration and attention of the Judges were also given to campaigns submitted by Lou Colantuano, Stanton theatre, Philadelphia; Phil Katz, Center, Pittsburgh; Joe Samartano, Loew's State, Providence; Gertrude Bunchez, Century, Baltimore; and Louis Charninsky, Rialto, Dallas, Texas.
