JESSEN'S PRODUCTION NOTES BY IFIRE Studio and Player Brevities LITTLE STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE ON THE LOT Around Metro Studios The first scenes of the Max Graf production, " The Fog," were made by Director Paul Powell at San Mateo studios this week. The Hunt Stromberg-Bull Montana company are back from two weeks at Truckee. Viola Dana has recovered from appendicitis operation sufficiently to be removed to her home. Rex Ingram, accompanied by Alice Terry, Edith Allen and Ramon Navarro, also Willis Goldeck, arrived from the east Thursday. Ingram will begin filming " Scaramouche " on March 15. With Paramount Units John Flynn left for New York Thursday, after preparing exploitation for " The Covered Wagon." George Fitzmaurice is beginning on " The Cheat " with Pola Negri and Jack Holt, featured, and Charles DeRoche, who appears in the role originally created by Sussue Hayawaka. Lois Wilson is spending a vacation in New York. James Cruze is beginning " Hollywood," the first scenes for which have been taken. Walter Woods, production editor, story by Frank Condon, continuity by Thomas Geraghty. The picture will show the famous cafes, road houses and cheap resorts of Hollywood and Los Angeles. George Melford arrived this week accompanied by Leatrice Joy, Nita Xaldi, and Lewis Stone, to complete " You Can't Fool Your Wife," partially filmed in New York studio. Sam Woods is casting " Bluebeard's Eighth Wife," starring Gloria Swanson, from a continuity by Sada Cowan, Julia Crawford Ivers, production editor. Antonio Moreno left for the east Friday to play opposite Agnes Ayres in " The Exciters," under the direction of Richard Ordynski. In production are : " Six Bits an Hour," starring Walter Hiers, under the direction of Joseph Henabery;. "The Rustle of Silk." starring Betty Compson and Conway Tearle, under the direction of Herbert Brenon. Wesley Ruggles, who directed Walter Hiers in his first starring picture for Paramount, has been signed to a long-term contract as a permanent addition to the Paramount West Coast studio, according to an announcement just made by Jesse L. Lasky. Waldemar Young has begun the adaptation of " Salomy Jane," from Paul Armstrong's play, based on Bret Harte's story, which will be George Melford's next production for Paramount, following " You Can't Fool Your Wife," now in production at the company's Long Island studio. " Salomy Jane " will be produced at the Lasky studio on the Coast. Here and There The Palmer Photoplay Corporation Company, engaged in filming '' Out of the Night," has returned from location at Truckee and is now making interiors at Ince studio. Roy L. Manker, president of the corporation, left for New York Saturday to complete releasing arrangements for this Palmer play. M. V. Wall Productions has leased space at Universal and is filming " The Right of the Strongest " from the novel by Francis Nemo Green, author of " One Clear Call." Edgar Lewis is directing. In the cast are E. K. Lincoln, Tom Santschi, Tully Marshall, George Seegman, Helen Ferguson, Robert Milasch, Gertrude Normand, Millie Davenport, Coy Watson, Jr., Ida M. Kinsey, Beth Kosik and Les Bates. The screen rights for " The Just and Unjust," by Vaughn Kester and " The Devil's Own," by Talbot Mundy, have been purchased by Thomas H. Ince. Ethel Shannon has been placed under three-year contract for featured parts by Schulberg as the result of her work in " The Hero " and "The Girl Who Came Back." L. J. Gasnier is now filming " Mothers-in-Law." Gaston Glass, Ruth Clifford, Viola Vale, Craufurd Kent, Josef Swickard, Edith York, Doris Stone, Marie Curtis and Lew Nathan compose the cast. Victor Schertzinger has been placed under contract to direct the third unit of an all-star cast production, for w*hich a continuity is now in preparation, picturing the old old song, " In a Mansion of Aching Hearts." Tom Forman has completed filming "April Showers " and is now editing the picture. The ground was broken Saturday for a new administration building at the United studios. Frank Lawrence has completed editing Alan Holubar's Canadian picture, " Slander the Woman " for First National. Arthur Jacobs and Frank Borzage have chosen "Sands of Time" as release title for story originally titled " Terwilliger." Edward Carewe has completed exteriors for " The Girl of the Golden West." Phillips Smalley's is the newest name to be added to the all-star cast which has been lined up by the C. B. C. Film Sales Corporation for their "Temptation." At Universal CityAnn Little and Fred Thompson, amateur all around American champion athlete, have been engaged to appear in the serial, "The Eagle's Talons," an outdoor story of adventure by Teo. Horton, producer and author of several Pearl White serials filmed for Pathe. Duke Warren will direct. Al Wilson, stunt aviator, will play an im portant role. Five airplanes have been purchased for the picture. Wallace Worsley begins filming mob scenes on mammoth sets representing the Palace du Parvais on one side, the Cathedral of Notre Dame on the other, and the famed Gibbet in the center. The set covers six acres. Other sets now standing for " The Hunchback of Notre Dame" cover more than twenty acres and all sets for the subject, if left standing, would cover more than thirty acres. King Baggott has written an original telephone exchange story entitled "Cross Wires," as a new vehicle for Gladys Walton. The continuity is by Hugh Hoffman East and West with Fox Work has been completed at the Fox west coast studios on the next Dustin Farnum picture, which has the working title of "Klondike Kit's Revenge." Arline Pretty is his leading lady and the heavy characters are played by Leon Barry and Sidney Dalbrook. Tom Mix has started work in another William Fox Production, "The Journey of Death,"' which Jack Ford is making from the story and scenario by Jules Furthman. Kathleen Key plays opposite Mix and Frank Campbeau has the heavy role. William Russell has finished " The Water Cross," which will be his next picture released by William Fox. Eva Novak has the leading feminine role. F. B. 0. Production Notes Harry Revier will direct a comedy drama entitled " Now You See It," by Wyndham Gettins and Helmar Bergman. In the cast are Tom Gallery, Virginia Fox, Tom Wilson. Victor Potel, Herbert Griswold, Gertrude Claire, Robert Walker, Jack Carlyle, Dave Morris. Emile Chautard is now directing " Day Times Wives " with an allstar cast including Wyndham Standing, Grace Darmond, Verelys Perdue, Will Conklin, Edward Hearn, Katherine Lewis, Kenneth Gibson, Christina Montt. The next Chester Bennett production, starring Jane Novak, is titled " Divorce," by Andrew Bennison. In the supporting cast are John Bower, James Corrigan, Edythe Chapman, Marguerite Livingston, Freeman Wood and George Fisher. Century Cut-Backs Four companies are working. Harry Edwards is directing Buddy Messinger in "The Bus Boy," with a cast including Fred Spencer, Jack Henderson, Lois Boyd. Al Herman is directing " Oh Nursev," with Jack Cooper, Jack Earle, Marjorie Meadows, Joe Bonner. Eugene DeRue is directing Bobbie Dunn in " The Poor Boob." Lillian Worth and Ernie Adams are the principal supports. Herman Raymaker is directing a Brownie comedy entitled " Try and Get It," with a cast including Blanch Payson, Ethel Lee Grant and Billy Engle. Archie Mayo has been engaged as director. Release titles : " Straighten Them Out," has been retitled " Sunny Jim " and " Melting Eyes " has been retitled " Welcome Lady." Ford West, Keith circuit artist, has been engaged by Stern Brothers. With Roach Comedians Harold Lloyd's recently completed comedy, " Giant vs. Runt," is. ready for shipment and was directed by Bob Goldman. Charles Parrott has completed a Snub Pollard comedy entitled "The Courtship of Miles Standish." George lesky has completed filming " Under Two Jags " starring Stan Laurel. Director Fred Jackman and company, filming Jack London's " The Call of the Wild," have gone to Truckee. The cast includes Laura Roessing. Walter Long. Frank Butler, Sidnev d'Albrook and Jack Mulhall. On the Goldwyn^Lot George Walsh has been placed under a long period contract to be featured. Haryon Aye and Phillip Ryder have been added to the cast of Xeilan's " The Eternal Three." William H. Crane has been engaged to play one of the important roles in a King Vidor directed subject, " Three Wise Fools," with Eleanor Boardman in the leading feminine role. The cast includes Claude Gillingwater, Alec Francis, Zasu Pitts, Martha Mattox, John Sainpolis and Fred Esmelton. Charles Brabin is here to direct Eleanor Glyn's story, " Six Days," featuring Corinne Griffith. Gibson Gowland is on his way here from England to play the ti tile role in Yon Stroheim's " McTeague." Gowland appeared in " Blind Husbands," " The Fighting Shepherdess " and " Behind the Door." Corinne Griffith, who was engaged to play the leading role in the Elinor Glyn picture, has arrived at the studios from New York and active work will soon get under way. Rupert Hughes will soon finish photographing " Souls for Sale.'' The burning of an eleven-acre circus will complete the picture. Hugo Ballin has arranged a studio screening of his production of " Vanity Fair " for film critics and magazine representatives.
