Motion Picture News 1548 "Jacqueline" Is Given Premiere Pine TreeArrow Special Has First Showing at U. S. Theatre, Paterson THE U. S. theatre, Paterson, N. J., was the scene of the world premiere of " Jacqueline ; Or, Blazing Barriers," on Monday night, March 19, when the Arrow Film Corporation launched the Pine Tree Special on its career with an elaborate showing. Those who know Paterson will remember that at the foot of Main Street is a high elevation known as Garret Mountain, and it was decided to reproduce a forest fire on this mountain. Permission was secured and an official permit issued. The Pain Fireworks Compan)' was engaged to handle this. In spite of the fact that a tremendously high wind was blowing, with frequent squalls of snow, the result was all that could be desired. Well advertised and given plenty of publicity, the street in front of the U. S. theatre was jammed. After the showing of the picture, which was attended by TV. E. Shallenberger, president of the Arrow Film Corporation; W. Kay Johnston, vice-president; H. H. Thomas, manager of Arrow exchanges; Governor Carl E. Milliken, of Pine Tree Pictures ; Director Dell Henderson, Sheldon Lewis, Lew Cody, Russel! Griffin of the " Jacqueline " company (who made personal appearances), Ray Gallagher and Larry Moen of the Motion Picture News, Larry Urbach of the Motion Picture Journal, George Blaisdell of the Exhibitors' Trade Review, Roger Ferri of the Moving Picture World, Paul Swift of the A. B. C. Corporation, Mayer Goldberg of the Mayer & Schneider Circuit, Maurice Krause, J. W. Van Zile, J. S. Jossey of Progress Pictures, Cleveland; H. Hirsch of Lightning Photoplays, Boston ; John Lowell, Mrs. L. Case Russell. Miss Evangeline Russell, the editors and a number of special writers and cartoonists from the Paterson newspapers, and many others, a buffet supper was given at the U. S. Hotel by the Arrow Film Corporation and a most enjoyable time was had. Earlier in the day Governor Milliken was officially welcomed to the city. Kathleen Key Is Signed by Goldwyn to Play Leads Kathleen Key has been engaged under a long-term contract by Goldwyn to play feminine leads. Her engagement makes her a permanent member of the Goldwyn stock company. Miss Key first played " atmosphere " for Ince three years ago. Later she appeared opposite Snowy Baker in a series of Australian pictures, and more recently was leading woman for Tom Mix. Miss Key is reputed to be a lineal descendant of the author of " The Star Spangled Banner," Francis Scott Key. Mahlon Hamilton Cast for Leads by Paramount Mahlon Hamilton has been engaged to play opposite Agnes Avres in " The Heart Raider," an adaptation of Harry Durante play, "Arms and the Girl," which will be started at a Florida location this week under the direction of Wesley Ruggles. Following that picture he will play opposite Bebe Daniels in " Bluff," also under Ruggles's direction. Scenes from the Larry Semon comedy for Vitagraph, " The Midnight Cabaret." C. B. C.Has A mbitiousPlans for Future Some ambitious plans for the coming year are announced by C. B. C. Sales Corporation. Eighteen productions will be released by C. B. C, according to the announcement by Jack Cohn and Joe Brandt. Each feature will be filmed with all-star casts. C. B. C. will release six of these pictures under its own trademark. Six pictures will be produced by Belasco Productions, Inc. Six more will be issued bearing the brand Columbia Pictures. " Temptation " and " Her Accidental Husband," two of the eighteen, have been completed and are now ready. Production on three others is about to be started. These are " Pal of Mine," " Forgive and Forget " and " The Lure of Broadway." The casts are now being assembled and the names of the stars featured in them as well as the directors intrusted with the task of transferring the stories to the screen will be announced shortly. As evidence of the demand for big pictures on the part of state right buyers, Mr. Cohn stated that seventy-five per cent of the territorial rights available on both " Temptation " and " Her Accidental Husband " were sold before either of these productions were completed. Cast Complete for "Daughters of the Rich*' B. P. Schulberg has completed the east for Edgar Saltus' novel, "Daughters of the Kich," with the signing of Joseph Swickard and J. Gunnis Davis to be added to the other featured players— Gaston Glass. Ruth Clifford, Ethel Shannon, Marjorie Daw and Stuart Holmes. Gasnier, who is directing the picture, has it well on toward completion. Prints will be in Lichtman exchanges by April 10th, ready for exhibition, it is expected.
