Erich von Stroheim started photography on " Creed," his own adaptation of Frank Norris' novel, " McTeague," in San Francisco last Wednesday. The twenty-three members of the Congressional party investigating the Boulder Canyon Dam, including Senators Norris of Nebraska and Ashurst of Arizona, were invited by Director Clarence Badger to appear as extras in " Red Lights." At Universal City Herbert Rawlinson's subject originally titled " Twenty Dollars," will be released under the title of "Fools and Riches." The " Leather Pushers " troupe, under the direction of Earl Kenton, has gone to Truckee. Hoot Gibson, Edward Sedgwick and Blinkie Coon are on the Mexican border making cavalry scenes. Jack Conway will direct Gladys Walton in " Sawdust," a Courtney Riley Cooper story of circus life. Edward Laemmle has completed the " Oregon Trail " serial. He, leaves for the East immediately, and on April 8 will be married in Chicago to Miss Peppi Heller. Gardner Bradford has been appointed supervisor of the editing department by Eugene H. Roth. Frank Messenger and J. Marchant, former assistant cameramen will co-direct the serial titled " Daniel Boone," featuring Jack Mower and Eileen Sedgwick. King Baggot will direct the next Richard Rawlins subject, " Thicker Than Water." The cast supporting Hoot Gibson includes Esther Ralston, Dewitt Jennings, Marhilde Brundage, Donald Hatseel, Charles E. French and William Lawrence. " Burning Words," a Northwest Mounted story by Harrison Warren Jacobs, will be the first starring vehicle for Roy Stewart, under the direction of Stuart Paton. The cast includes Laura La Plante, Harold Goodwin, William Walsh, Edith Yorke, Alfred Fisher, Noble Johnson, Harry Carter and George McDaniels. The complete cast for the " Leather Pushers " third scries includes Hayden Stevenson, Elinor Field, Gertrude Olmstead, Melbourne McDowell, Ed Kennedv, Harry Lorraine, Kid Wagner and Jack Henderson. Edward T. Lowe, Jr., is adapting the story, "The Prisoner," and " The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Conway will select his cast within a few days. "The Self-made Wife" will lie the material for the next all-star production which Jack Conway will direct. Esther Ralston will have the leading feminine role in " Pure Grit," a Hoot Gibson starring vehicle, now being filmed at Universal City under the direction of Edward Sedgwick. A With Paramount Units William DeMille has started work on " Only Thirty-Eight," adapted from A. E. Thomas' play. Clara Beranger wrote the adaptation. The cast included Elliott Dexter as the professor, May McAvoy in the leading role, George Fawxett, Lois Wilson, Robert Agnew. James Cruze and his company have returned to Hollywood from New York. Cecil DeMille will not start work on " The Ten Commandments " for at least six weeks, as preparations for actual production work will require that interval. Director Charles Maigne has begun " The Silent Partner " with Leatrice Joy and Owen Moore in the leading roles. Jacqueline Logan, Maurice Flynn and William Davidson are the principals in " Salomy Jane," which is being produced by George Melford. The adaptation was written by Waldemar Young. Director Rob Wagner has left Hollywood for Pleasanton to film exteriors for " Fair Week," in which The " Our Gang " comedy, Pathe, in which the above scenes occur, is titled " A Pleasant Journey." Walter Hiers will appear in the featured role. Constance Wilson, sister of Lois, who played a bit in " The Covered Wagon," has been selected as leading woman for Hiers in this subject. The rest of the cast includes J. Farrell McDonald, Bobbie Mack, Mary Jane Irving, Newt Erickson, Carmen Phillips and others. Other subjects in production are: " The Woman with Four Faces," starring Betty Compson under the direction of Herbert Brenon ; " The Cheat," with Pola Negri, George Fitzmaurice directing; "Children of Jazz," Jerome Storm directing, with an all-star cast; "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife," starring Gloria Swanson under the direction of Sam Woods. General Manager Charles Eyton went to San Francisco this week to bid good-bye to his wife, Kathleen Williams, who is leaving for China on a three months' vacation. Edward S. Curtis and Bert Glennon have been appointed photographers for Cecil B. DeMille productions. Jack Richardson is essaying the part of the sheriff in Dorothy Dalton's new Paramount picture, " Fog Bound," which Irvin Willat is producing at the Long Island studio. Bevan, Harry Gribbon, Eugenie Gilbert, Dot Farley in a domestic economy subject. " Mary Ann " is the title of the new subject selected as Mable Normand's next stellar vehicle. Richard Jones has been appointed the supervising director of all Mack Sennett's comedy and feature companies. He will supervise the story material, select casts, wardrobes and conduct rehearsals. Warner Brothers Items Herman Raymaker and Al Santell have completed filming of six onereel subjects showing the life of Gene Sarazen, champion golfer of the world. Julien Josephson has completed an original story titled, " Printers Devil," for Wesley Barry, who returns from a vaudeville tour this week. Direction will be by William Beaudine. The title of "Wolf Fangs" has been changed to " The White Silence." It will require five weeks more to complete this Harry Rapf production, directed by Chester Franklin. Gus Miller, special exchange representative of Warner Brothers, is spending the week at the studio. Clara Kimball Young in some scenes of "The Woman of Bronze," a Harry Garson production for Metro With Sennett Comedians Mack Sennett will resume production activities this week in fulfillment of his recently signed Pathe contract. By the end of the week five units will be at work. William Seiter is directing " The Extra Girl," which is Phyllis Haver's initial starring vehicle. Ralph Graves appears opposite Miss Haver. Roy Del Ruth is directing " Mud Pies and Puddles," with Harry Gribbon, Lila Leslie, Kewpie Morgan, Alberta Vaughn, Jackie Lucas and " Teddy." Mel Brown is directing Ben Turpin in a special two-reel production titled " Where Is My Wandering Boy This Evening?" In the cast are Priscilla Bonner, Dot Farley, Madeline Hurlock and James Finlayson. Chester Wallace is directing Billy Merit Film Corp. Suggests Ad for Serial The Merit Film Corporation, distributing the new Arrow serial, :< The Fighting Skipper," starring Peggy O'Day, Francis Ford and Jack Perrin, have inaugurated an inexpensive advertising stunt, based on a Tongue Twister Contest. They have sent out a letter to all the exhibitors handling the picture, advising them of this contest and offering three prizes: the first, twenty-five dollars ; the second, fifteen dollars; and the third, ten dollars ; and give them a sample tongue twister as follows : Tantalizing Thrills That Thoroughly Thrill Thankful Throngs ! This is a simple and inexpensive idea which any exhibitor can adopt and which should prove very successful.
