Laemmle Sees Dean Film
Universal Chief Back From Coast Enthused Over " Outside the Law "
CARL LAEMMLE, president of the Universal Film Manufacturing Company, arrived in New York City from Los Angeles last week, expressing great enthusiasm over " Outside the Law " the new big Priscilla Dean picture, written and directed by Tod Browning. The Universal chief acclaims it as the greatest piece of work Miss Dean has ever done for the screen, and predicts it will rank among the few great pictures of film history.
" Outside the Law " will have its premier showing at the Superba theatre, Los Angeles, during the week of December 26. Arrangements for this pre-release showing were made by appeal to Mr. Laemmle himself, during his recent stay at Universal City. The showing will be accompanied by unusual exploitation and presentation, including personal appearances by Miss Dean as well as by Lon Chaney, who supported her in the underworld picture.
No release date has been set for the big Universal-Jewel production, but Mr. Laemmle has promised his exchange managers that a first run print of the picture will be in each exchange January 2. This has necessitated a departure in the usual
methods of Universal print distribution. Positive prints of Universal pictures ordinarily are made at the Universal factory at Fort Lee, N. J.
To expedite the distribution' of first run prints, for this special feature, Mr. Laemmle ordered that the first run positives be made at Universal City, immediately upon the completion of the cutting and editing of the film. This was done, and the film now is being speeded to the fifty-odd Universal exchanges throughout the United States and Canada.
It is expected that the picture will be shown simultaneously in many places, early in January. Arrangements are being completed for a theatre on Broadway, in which to give the picture an indefinite run. So confident is Mr. Laemmle that the picture will be the sensation of the season, Universal already has under way an exploitation campaign ■ for the metropolitan district projected for extension well into the Spring. A similar campaign ha« been inaugurated in other parts of the country, for the purpose of giving Universal exhibitors extensive aid in " selling " the picture to the public.

Statement Issued by Abraham Lehr
The following statement has been issued b}' Abraham Lehr, vice president of the Goldwyn organization, regarding the GoldwjTi production policy for 1921 :
" In the new ytzx we shall bend all our efforts to the making of photoplays with strong, hursan, appealing stories, acted by wellrounded casts of competent players. Our goal will be fewer and better pictures. We have learned that the public wants logical, sensible plots that appeal to inteUigent people. Shakespeare said, ' The play's the thing.'
