New Exchange Buys Film Cosmopolitan Film, of Boston, Buys " Every Woman's Problem " A DEAL was consummated this week between Nat Levine, president of Plymouth Pictures, Inc., and the newly organized Cosmopolitan Film Co. of Boston, whereby the latter acquired the New England rights to Plymouth's " Every Woman's Problem." According to Robert Cobe, of Cosmopolitan, " Every Woman's Problem " will be the company's first offering to New England exhibitors and will probably be released around April 1st. In discussing Cosmopolitan's policy Mr. Cobe stated that the new Independent Exchange will confine itself exclusively to big first run attractions and will distribute in New England a maximum of twelve independent features a year. Each Cosmopolitan attraction, said the company's general manager, will be backed by an intensive sales and exploitation campaign. Commenting upon his purchase of " Every Woman's Problem " for New England, Mr. Cobe characterized the Plymouth feature as one of the outstanding Independent offerings of the current season. " I and my associate, M. C. Goodman," said Mr. Cobe " happened to be present at a trial showing of the picture in a Boston theatre and were immediately impressed with its exceptional possibilities. Aside from the excellent production given the story and the pictures entertainment value, we saw in the star, Mrs. Wallace Reid, the title and the timeliness of the theme, a combination of real box office power and an opportunity to put over a smashing advertising campaign. Our faith in the possibilities of " Every Woman's Problem " is reflected in the fact that we signed our contract with Mr. Levine less than one hour after we saw the picture and are making " Every Woman's Problem " our first release. Interest in "Annabel Lee" Title and Authorship Arouses Exhibitor Interest in Joan Film THE latest state-right release of the Joan Film Sales Co. " Annabel Lee " an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's poem, in which Lorraine Harding and Jack O'Brien are starred, has begun to attract the attention of exhibitors, states Joan. This is considered a strong symptom of the popularity of this poempicture, as no attempt has been made by Joan to interest theatres directly. The only effort that has been launched has been directed at state-right buyers. The few announcements that have appeared in the trade-papers were enough to arouse the interest of many of the foremost exhibitors of the country, as indicated by the number of inquiries that have been arriving at Joan headquarters for the past two weeks. An examination of the demand among theatres for " Annabel Lee " shows that it is based on three prominent features of the picture. First is the title. The name of " Annabel Lee " as the favorite poem of thousands was declared by some exhibitors to be the " magnet that will attract patrons. The second popular feature of " Annabel Lee" was stated as the authorship. The plot of " Annabel Lee " constituted the third interesting element of the Joan release. The action, being laid in the fishingvillage off the New England shore and being replete with picturesque scenes of the life of the fisher-folk, accounted for the appeal that " Annabel Lee " would have to fans. The dramatic intensity of the story and the sentimental touches with which the action abounds, were pointed out as among the attractions of the picture-poem. On Your Mark ! Get Set ! !
