776 Motion Picture News Jessen's Studio News by Wire FOX A long term contract has been made with Barbara Bedford to star in Fox productions. The Al St. John's contract has been renewed. Chester Conklin has contracted to appear in twelve comedies to be directed by Earl Kenton. Director George Marshall has completed " Bar Nothin' " starring Buck Jones. Jones is now making " Riding with Death " under the direction of Jacques Jaccard. Eileen Percy has begun production on " Little Miss Hawkshaw " with Carl Harbaugh directing. "The Desert Shall Bloom," with William Russell in the stellar role and Arthur Rosson directing, is in production. Jack Gilbert is finishing " The Fighting Spirit.' ' Jack Dillon is directing. "The Drifter" in which Johnny Walker and Edna Murphy have the principal roles is nearing completion under the direction of William Howard. Shirley Mason's " Queenie " is completed. The star is planning a new production under Jack Dillon's direction. The story is now being selected. Howard Mitchell and Eileen Hughes of Denver were married last week and are now on their honeymoon at Coronado. Upon his return Mitchell will direct Miss Bedford. Emmett Flynn is expected to arrive shortly from New York with his next story. Fox now has eighteen feature and comedy-companies at work on the West Coast. FAMOUS PLAYERS George Melford and company, including Agnes Ayres and Rudolph Valentino, have returned from a three weeks stay on the desert where scenes for " The Sheik " have been filmed. James Cruze, Roscoe Arbuckle and Lila Lee are back from Chicago where exteriors for " Freight Prepaid " were taken. " Freight Main studio building of the Mesco Pictures Company, Mesco City, near Kansas City, Mo. Prepaid " was previously titled " Fast Freight." REALART Constance Binney was shceduled to arrive at the Coast on Wednesday to begin her first production at Hollywood. She will be directed By Maurice Campbell, who has made seven consecutive pictures starring Bebe Daniels. Director Frank O'Connor has completed " The Happy Ending," written by Margaret Turnbull. May McAvoy will be the star. VITAGRAPH Wilfred North, Vitagraph's production manager, is to direct Earle Williams in " Lucky Carson." The cast is now being assembled. Larry Semon is doing a dual role in "The Bell Hop." The picture is practically completed. UNIVERSAL Hoot Gibson, with Molly Malone as his leading woman, is working on the last scenes of " Bransford of Rainbow Ridge " under the direction of Jack Ford. A new Universal serial with Art Acord starred and titled " Winner of the West " is scheduled for early production. The story is by Ford Beebe and is a history of the West laid around the Captain John Fremont expedition. Edward Laemmle is to direct. Priscilla Dean, Herbert Rawlinson and company, producing " The Conflict " under the direction of Stuart Paton, have returned from Canada where scenes were taken last. The Harry Carey production, originally titled " Partners," has been renamed " The Fox." The picture is nearing completion under the direction of Robert Thornby. Claire Windsor, signed to play opposite Frank Mayo in " Dr. Jim," starts work Sept. 1st. Dallas Fitzgerald is to direct Gladys Walton is " The Guttersnipe," a comedv-drama by Percival Wilde. Lucien Hubbard has added J. Grub Alexander, Edward Lowe, Jr., and Rita Kissin to the original story and continuity staff of Universal. ASSOCIATED PRODUCERS "The Cup of Life," starring Hobart Bosworth, and with Madge Bellamy, Tully Marshall and Miles Welch in support, is now being edited by Del Andrews. The final scene for the Thomas H. Ince production, " Lucky Damage," directed by Lambert Hillyer, has been completed. J. L. Frothingham will begin production next week on a new picture, the title of which is witheld. King Vidor is making the last scenes of " Love Never Dies," in which Lloyd Hughes and Madge Bellamy are featured. The cast includes Claire McDowell, Winifred Greenwood, Lillian Leighton, Fred Gamble and others. The picture was made at the Ince studio. FIRST NATIONAL Raoul Walsh has selected Lionel Belmore, Ralph Graves, and W. J. Ferguson to support Miriam Cooper in "Kindred of the Dust." Production starts next week.
