786 Motion Picture News View of a set up, note Cooper-Hewitts on all sides Install Giant Motor-Generator Set in Los Angeles Studio Largest Ever Constructed for Motion Picture Use The Louis B. Mayer Studios of Los Angeles, which houses the producing forces of the Anita Stewart and John M. Stahl companies, the Carter De Haven company and Oliver Morosco's new film contingent, recently became the home of what is said to be the largest motor-generator set ever constructed for motion picture use. It is a 400-kw., two-unit motor-generator set consisting of one 580-hp. three-phase, 2200-volt, 50-cycle synchronous motor direct connected to a 400-kw., 250-volt, 600r.p.m., six-pole compound wound interpole generator, rated at 1500 amp. It has supplied 3000 amp. Direct connected to the generator shaft on an overhanging bracket is a 125-volt, 7-kw. inter-poled exciter for the motor. The motor has drawn as high as 1105-hp. for one-half periods with very little strain. The balancer set for the machine consists of two 25-kw. four pole, compound wound, 125-volt, 1800 r.p.m. generators direct connected. These machines take care of current per side of line when unbalanced. There also is a three-unit set consisting of one 300-hp. three-phase, 2200-volt, 50cycle G. E. induction motor direct connected to two 100-kw., 125-volt 720 r. p. m. four-pole compound wound generators, connected in a series for 1 10-220-volt, three-wire service, 1000 amp. output per generator. At times for very short periods such as ten or fifteen minutes, the above described machinery is forced to an output as high as 1050 kw. — 800 on the large set (100 per cent overload) and 250 on the small set, or at 115 volts, close to 8700 amp. The A. C. stage lighting consists of three three-phase 100-kw. transformers connected closed delta for 110 volts. This is to care for the ever necessary Cooper Set in Anita Stezvart picture.
