Smith is here and announces the engagement of Carmel Myers to star in a Vitagraph serial titled " Breaking Through," to be directed by Robert Enswinger. Dave Smith and company arc producing '* The Flower of the North," and are in the mountains for exteriors. Gertrnde Astor has been added to the cast of " Lucky Carson," starring Earl Williams, with Betty Koss Clarke. LASKY The scenario and directors' office building is being doubled in size to accommodate the increased staff. Cecil DeMillc will start on a new subject this month upon the completion of the editing of " Fools' Paradise." William DcMille is scheduled to begin a new production on August 8th. Howard Higgin, recently promoted to be a director, is scheduled to direct Wally Reid in " Rent Free." Frank E. Woods will supervise. In production are " The Sheik," under the direction of George Melford; "Don't Tell Everything," under the direction of Sam Wood, On location with Frank Mayo and the Universal company making " The Shark Master " with Wallace Reid, Gloria Swanson and Elliot Dexter ; " Freight Prepaid," under the direction of James Cruze, with Arbuckle; "The Woman in the Case," under the direction of Penrhyn Stanlaws, with Betty Compson, and " Exit EXHIBITOR PREPARE FOR THE OPENING OF YOUR SEASON NOW! REALART Chester Franklin has arrived here and is making arrangements to direct Bebe Daniels in " Spring Fever," from a scenario by Douglas Doty. Eddie Sutherland and Myrtle Steadman have been selected for leading parts. The first Western-made Constance Binney subject will be "The Heart of Youth," by Sonia Levine, and directed by Maurice Campbell. Director Frank O'Connor is making the last scenes for " The Happy Ending," with May McAvoy. Construction has been started on a new stage for the Realart plant. It will be 90 by 120. When completed the stage capacity of the studio will have been doubled in the past six months. METRO Harriet Hammond, late lead for Arbuckle and Josef Swichard, has been cast for one of the leading roles in " The Golden Gift," starring Alice Lake, under the direction of Maxwell Karger. Jack Mulhill, who is now playing opposite Viola Dana in " The Fourteenth Lover," under the direction of Harry Beaumont, will appear in the leading role of " Joe " in " Turn to the Right," the new Rex Ingram production. Kate Lester, Alberta Lee and Frederick Yroon have been added to the " Fourteenth Lover " cast. UNIVERSAL Craig Hutchison has been en gaged by Universal to direct a series of comedies featuring Bert Roach, formerly with the Scnnett forces. Frank Mayo will spend August making a personal appearance tour in Mexico. Eddito Polo and " The Secret Four " company are now spending their fourth week in Catalina Island. The Universal Zoo has been increased by the purchase of eight baby kangaroos. The Harry Carey company, which has been four weeks in Majava desert filming " The Fox," has returned home. King Baggott and company, making " The Girl Who Knew All About Men," have returned from three weeks in Little Bear Valley. An army camp with two hundred men, depicting the westward march of General Fremont, has been built in Topanga Canyon, and is now being filmed for " Winners of the West," a serial by Ford Beebe, under the direction of Edward Laemmle. The Paton-Dean company have two days shooting at the studio to finish " Conflict." The exteriors were made in Canada. ROBERTSONCOLE Plans are made for full capacity production. The Hunt-Stromberg company begins making " Young Ideas," starring Doris May, with William A. Seiter directing. In the cast are Hal Cooley, Otis Harlan, Bull Montana and Lillian Worth. Colin Campbell will direct Pauline Fredericks in " The Lure of Jade," an original story by Marion Orth. Sessue Hawayaka is home from his eastern trip. He will film " The Street of Flying Dragoon," the cast and director as yet unselected. Louis Gasnier will film the Harriet Comstock story of mother love. It is titled " Mam'selle Joe." In the cast are Rose Dion, Tully Marshall, Jack Livingston, Arthur Hull and Jack Mower. FOX The supporting cast for Buck Jones in " Riding with Death " includes William Gillis, Jack Mower, Betty Francisco, Tina Midotti, Artie Orgega, Farrell MacDonald and William Steel. The story and direction are by Jacques Jaccard. The cast supporting Eileen Percy in " Little Miss Hackshawn " includes Eric Mayne, Leslie Casey, Frank Clar, Vivian Ransome, Glen Cavendar and others. William Russell begins " The Desert Shall Blossom," by Arthur Corbaley. The scenario is Arthur Zellner and the direction by Arthur Rosson. In the cast arc Helen Ferguson, W. J. Highly, Willis Robards, Margaret Mann, Dulci Cook, Charles Spere and Charles Pring.
