2184 Motion Picture New Jcssen s Studio News by Wirt HAL ROACH The Ruth Roland serial, "The White Eagle," has been shipped East. The release date for this serial has been set for January 1st. Harold Lloyd's comedy, " Sailor Made Man," is to be given a tryout in four theatres before being shipped East. The picture has just been completed. "Shake 'Em Up" has just been completed \>y Snub Pollard under the direction of Charles Parrott. An earthquake and Mexican banditry play important parts in the story. Two stories have been completed for Harold Lloyd by Jean Havez and Sam Taylor. Selection of the new story is to be made this week and production is to be started immediately thereafter. The " Snub " Pollard company is now making a comedy laid in the time of 1980. William Watson is directing under the supervision of Charles Parrott. UNIVERSAL Julian Josephson and directed by William Beaudine, has been completed. Illness prevents Ethel Kay from continuing as the lead in " Hungry Hearts," which is being produced by Mason Hopper. Edward McWade, Harry Gribbon, William Orlamond and May Wells have been added to the cast of " What Ho— the Cook." Katherine Ncwlin Burt has written the " Summons," now being prepared for production. Rupert Hughes has completed another original screen story, entitled " Remembrance." Grant Carpenter has been engaged by Goldwyn and is now writing continuity for " Brothers Under Their Skin," written by Peter B. Kvnc. Jack Conway is directing Frank Mayo in " Wards of the North." The company, which has gone to the Big Bear country, includes Russell Simpson, Wilfred Lucas, Molly Malone, Josef Swickard, Lydia Knott and others. Production work on " Princess Virtue " has been delayed owing to the illness of Marie Prevost. The complete cast for this picture includes Tom Gallery, George Fisher, George Periolat, Lillian Lawrence, Bertram Grasby, Lillian Rambeau, May Busch and Rose Dione. The release title of Marie Prevost's subject, "The Girl Who Knew All About Men," has been changed to " Nobody's Fool." This is a comedy drama by Roy Clement, directed by King Baggott. King Baggott is now assembling an all star cast for " Human Hearts," adapted by Gerald Duffy from Hal Reid's play. Alfred Allen has been added to the cast of " Man to Man," which stars Harry Carey under the direction of Stuart Paton. Herbert Hayes has been engaged as the leading man for the next Miss DuPont starring vehicle, which is titled " Clay." Paul Scardon will direct. Comedj productions now on the way include " As Toiled in the Office," featuring Berth Roach imder the direction of Craig Hutcheson. Lee Moran has selected Blanche Payson to be his leading woman in his next comedy production. Moran will produce at the Century studio in Hollywood, instead of at Universal City. " Shipwrecked Among Animals," a comedy starring Harry Sweet, is now being completed under the direction of Alf Goulding. Abe Stern, treasurer of Universal Film, has arrived in Los Angeles. GOLDWYN " The City Feller," written by METRO Rex Ingram, while editing " Turn to the Right," is selecting members of the cast for his next production, " The Prisoners of Zenda." Robert Edeson has been engaged for the role of Col. Sapt. Alice Terry will play the female lead, and Edward Connelly has been selected for an important role. Mary O'Hara is writing the continuity for this subject. Grace Morse, the Morosco stock player, has been engaged for a leading role in " Seeing's Believing," which stars Viola Dana under the direction of Harry Beaumont. Maxwell Karger is preparing to film " Kissed," with Alice Lake as the star. Harry Meyers has been engaged for the leading male role. Bayard Veiller is preparing the next story for Bert Lytell. ^ROBERTSONGOLE Louis Gasnier is completing the editing of " Madamoiselle Jo," and will shortly begin production work on " The Call of Home," which is adapted from George Agnew Chamberlain's story, " Home." The cast includes Irene Rich, Leon Barry, Jobyna Rawlston, Carl Stockdale, Robert Bolder, Margaret Mann, Wadsworth Harris, Genevieve Blinn and James O. Barrows. The second Hunt Stromberg production starring Doris May is adapted ■ from Ralph Renaud's " Eden and Return." Beatrice Van is preparing the continuity. \\'illiam Seiter is the director. Bert Cann will be the cameraman. The cast includes Emmett King, Margaret Livingston, Earle Metcalf, Margaret Campbell, Buddy Post and Gerald Pring. Pauline Frederick's " The Lure of Jade " has been completed under the direction of Colin Campbell, who is now directing the star in " Judith of Blue Lake Ranch." The picture is adapted from Jackson Gregory's novel, the continuity being prepared by Winifred Dunn. The cast includes L. C. Shumway, Tom Santschi, Jack Curtis, Philip Hubbard, Billy Elmer, Clarissa Sel An amusing moment from the new George Fitzmaurice production, " Experience." Richard Barthelmess heads the cast of this Paramount release wyn, Jean Calhoun, Tom Bates, Dave Winter, Sam Appel, Eugene Paulette. Sessue Hayakawa is editing "The Street of the Dragon" and will next star in " The Vermillion Pencil," a Chinese story by Homer Lea. Norman Dawn will probably continue as the director. LASKY The productions now on the way include: Cecil DeMille's "Saturday Night," George Melford's " Moran of Lady Letty," " The Champion," starring Wallace Reid under the direction of Phil Rosen; "The Little Minister," starring Betty Compson ; Ek," featuring Will Rogers and Lila Lee under the direction of James Cruze ; " The Husband's Trade Mark," in which Gloria Swanson is being starred under the direction of Sam Woods. " The Call of the North," which stars Jack Holt, has been completed. Joseph Henaberry directed this subject. Among the productions just starting is: "For the Defence," in which Ethel Clayton is starred. The picture is adapted from Elmer Rice's play, and the continuity was prepared by Beulah Marie Dix. Vernon Steel arrived in Los Angeles recently and will play opposite Miss Clayton. Another subject just started is " The Lane That Has No Turning," written by Gilbert Parker. Agnes Ayres is the featured plaj-er. and the supporting cast includes Theodore Kosloff, Mahlon Hamilton and Frank Campau. \'ictor Flemming is the director. BRUNTON The new Frothingham subject, " The Man Who Smiles," has just been started. The principal roles are played by Marcia Manon, William Mong and Mary Wj-nn. Edward Sloman is directing.
