KLEINE "POMPEII" CREATES RIOT
The great De Luxe Theatre on Wilson Avenue, Chicago, billed
George Kleine's "Last Days of Pompeii" for one night recently. Despite the fact that the evening was cold and rainy, a mob swarmed into the De Luxe, almost wrecking the boxoffice, and requiring special police to keep order. Three shows were originally planned, but the crowds demanded a fourth performance, which was given after midnight.
One significant fact was the appearance of hundreds of automobile parties, whose cars lined the streets for blocks on either side. About 10 o'clock it was found necessary to carry water to the fainting women who had become wedged in the lobby and could not be extricated. Undoubtedly George Kleine's "Last Days of Pompeii" crammed the big De Luxe as it has never been jammed before.
