NICKOLAUS, superintendent'of photography at Universal City, has served as a photographer for twentytwo years, and was one of the first photographers to enter the field when motion pictures were invented. For a long time he was connected with the DeWitt C. Wheeler Lantern Slide Company, and later affiliated with Electrograph, Centaur and Nestor Companies. When the Universal Company was organized Mr. Nickol faus was sefcv jm.* lected as su perintendent of photography, and has since been with that organization. He first served as superintendent of the eastern j laboratories, I then at t h e = coast for two I years, and j was recalled g east to super = vise the construction of the Fort Lee laboratories, and at the 1 same time to be superintendent of the Universal laboratories at 1 I Bayonne, while the new plant was being built. The 8300,000 I 1 laboratories at Fort Lee being completed under Mr. Nickolaus' g i supervision, he was returned to Universal City, going back to g § the coast last October. ULLMAN, CAMERAMAN, UNIVERSAL j EDWARD G. Ullman, affectionately known as = "Eddie" — has been with the Universal over three g years and for the past year has had under his charge g sixty-eight men. He was one of the pioneer camera g men and knows every angle of the photographic g business. g Born In Natchez, Miss., forty-two years ago, he g received a high school education and entered the g photographic business which he mastered from bot g torn to top. It was twelve years ago when he flrst = entered the moving picture art. He was with the g Reliance Company and Joined the Majestic as cam g eraman when that company was flrst formed. In g 1912 he came to the coast with Stanner E. V. Taylor g and Marlon Leonard, doing the photography for the s production, "As in a Looking Glass." Since Joining the Universal he has acted as camera g man for Lincoln J. Carter, Henry McRae, Harry = Pollard, Francis Ford and Joseph DeGrasse. He made the flrst Universal serial, g "Lucille Love" in which Francis Ford and Grace Cunard were starred. =_ He was the flrst president of the Static Club and was unanimously re-elected g = 3 for a second term. H. MAGUIRE CAMERAMAN, UNIVERSAL H. H. MAGUIRE, TJniversal cameraman, has 1 been connected with the photographic department of the motion picture industry for seven years. He began with the old Nestor Company in the east where he remained for three years. He went to the west coast with a company and remained with them for a year. At the formation of the Universal Company, he was one of the first cameramen employed and has since been with this company. He was born in New York City, and educated at Bayonne, New Jersey. Besides having a thorough knowledge of camera work, he is also experienced in every part of the laboratory. His late releases are "A King From Broadway," "The Belle and the Bell Hop," "Some Medicine Man," "He Became A Regular Fellow," "A Lucky Leap," "His Golden Hour," and others. He was formerly photographer for the Otis Turner Feature Company. STEPHEN S. NORTON CAMERAMAN UNIVERSAL A S Stephen S. Norton, who has been responsible for the photography and f"X several hundred photoplays, was born in New York and calls Buffalo, New York, his home. He worked on motion pictures In New York City, and came to Los Angeles In 1912, with H. C. Matthews, making child pictures, featuring ''Early and Matty." In the four years on the coast he has worked with many noted directors. Including Robert Leonard, Lois Weber, Phillips Smalley, Otis Turner and others. Included In the long list of subjects he has photographed are "Snow White," "Beauty and the Beast," "Sleeping Beauty," "Mavis of the. Glen," each of three reels; "The SllentCommand," "Shattered Memories," each of four reels: "The Master Key," serial, thirty reels; "The Seekers," five reels. He also did notable work on "Where Are My Children?", "John Needham's Double," "Eye of God," and "Shoes," each of five reels. ■* Mr. Norton is a charter member of the Static Club of America, and member of its Board of Directors, and has served as treasurer of the club for two years. He Is now photographing the Universal photoplay made under the direction of E.
