A Rogue's Defeat — No. 11 of Jimmie "Dale Series — (Two Reels) — Monmouth -.Mutual — June 1.— Featuring E. K. Lincoln. The Tocsin warns Jimmie Dale that a scoundrel, Markel, is forcing Henry Wilbur to meet a demand :note for $50,000 or forfeit his rights to some very valuable mining property. Markel has given his wife a very expensive diamond necklace, which is ■really paste. The Grey Seal visits Markel, takes the necklace and also the demand note, which he -returns to Wilbur just in time to save him from suicide. He makes Wilbur promise to pay Markel the money as soon as possible. When it is paid the Grey Seal will return the. necklace to Marke!. -Markel promises to keep quiet to save himself the humiliation ol having it advertised that the jewels are paste.
• The Flight that Failed — (Two Reels) — L.\ Salle-Mutual — June 4. — Madge, an heiress, is "sent to Mrs. Gibson-Brown's Retreat for Young Ladies to escape the lures of a certain Dark Man. They will not be parted, however, and decide to elope. As Madge appears on the balcony in boy's clothes, she is seen by Chief of Police Otto, who takes her for a burglar and arrests her. The .youth attracts him and he takes her to his home instead of the jail. At the bachelor abode of Chief Otto complications arise and after a Strenuous half-hour the heiress faints and the Chief discovers" that she is a girl. The Dark. Man is later arrested and brought to the Chief's house, where the maid recognizes him as her husband. Madge, her romance spoiled, discovers in Chief Otto her childhood sweetheart and all ends happily.
A Leap for Life — (Two Reels) — Signal-Mutual— Tune 4. — Featuring Helen Holmes. No. 9 ■of Railroad Raiders Series Helen Holmes discovers a plot by the raiders to rob a certain express freight car which contains an especially valuable consignment of goods. The car is on the ferry slro ready to cross the bay, when" the raiders, with a steam barge, unload the coveted freight and make off with it. Helen is driving "an automobile at top speed, but arrives too late to catch it. She leaps the 'gap in the machine and. lands safely on the deck. The raiders have placed a timed bomb on the boat, and seeing -Helen and Roy Wilson on the barge, they shoot Rov, wounding him just before the explosion. Helen ties his unconscious form on a raft and pushing it before her, swimming with one hand, ■manages to reach the shore. The raiders, seeing the explosion, believe Helen Holmes to be finally disposed of. ■ ■ ■
A Two-Cylinder Courtship— (One Reel) — June 6. — -Featuring Billie Rhodes and Jay Belasco. Jay and Billie cannot overcome father's objections, so they elope in Jay's two-cvlinder car. "Before they start Jay empties almost all the gasoline from dad's car, and as the chase becomes lively father is stalled. Father telephones Lawyer Jones, who disguises himself as a minister. Thev are invited upstairs for the ceremony and are locked in a -room. They make a rope of -blankets and are about to escape when father rushes in. Thev hide, and wh'le he is trying to discover -whether thev escaped by means of the rope, they run -out the open door. A real minister meets them on the street, and. father, in the window upstairs, is a witness to the ceremony.
There and Back— (One Reel) — Horsley-Mut'ual — June 7. — Featuring (Teoree Ovey. Jerry goes to" sleep while driving his flivver, is arrested and fined, but having no money, the Judge holds his car for the amount. Terry appropriates the constable's motorcvde and makes his get-away and is chased by the representatives of the law. The chase ends disastrously for Jerry, but lands him in the midst of a complicated scheme of a villain to elope wi'h th^ daughter of the Judee. The villain has robbed the Tudge's safe, but Jerry succeeds in foiling the villain and stopping the elopement.
Good for Evil — (Two Reels)— No. 12 o* Jimmie Dale Series — Tu»e 8. — Featuring E. K. Lincoln. Marie La Salle has been in the tenement district in behalf of charity, and is trailed home bv the Woman in Black. Jimmie receives word from the" Tocsin to return the necklace
which he stole from Goldfeather and Frost (the one black mark against him). When he enters the office he finds that someone has robbed the sale, and a letter, dropped by the thief, discloses his identity. Jimmie investigates at the address given, and finds that the young man stole to provide for his sick wife and baby. Jimmie tells him to return the money' ahd gives him his own pocket money. He passes the home of Marie on his way home and discovers the Pretender, the Woman in Black and a crook plotting to kidnap Marie. Jimmie calls the police and there is a struggle. Jimmie is forced to let the Pretender go in order, to save his own neck. The crook states that the Grey Seal was there, but this is denied by Marie. Carruthers, newspaper editor, calls Jimmie on the phpne to exclaim, "The GraySeal is at it again !"
The Scrapper — (Two Reels) — Bison — June 9. —With Jack Ford and Louis Granville. Helen Dawson, a schoolteacher, rejects Buck Logan's offer of marriage and returns to the city. In the city Helen finds ft difficult to make both ends meet. Jerry Martin, a parasite, is attracted by the appearance of Helen. He and Martha Mayes, proprietress of a questionable establishment, plan to use Helen as a tool to attract a certain wealthy man. The plan works and Helen goes to the house unsuspecting anything wrong. In the meantime Buck and the boys are sent to the city with a shipment of cattle. Buck had never forgotten Helen, and hoped against hope to meet her in the city. Buck assists a girl, who has sprained her ankle, to her home. They enter the house where Helen is and Buck is just in time to rescue the girl from the advances of Colonel Stanton. A fight ensues, but the other boys come to his assistance. They then escort Buck and Helen to a train leaving for the West.
Who's Looney Now? — (Two Reels)— Nestor— June 8 — With Eddie Lyons, Billie Rhodes and Lee Moran. Eddie and Billie have just returned from their honeymoon. An old trunk of Billie s arrives from home. In it she finds the picture of the man to whom she was engaged before she met Eddie. She hides the picture under the bureau cover, but it falls to the floor behind the bureau. When she goes to get it it is gone and she suspects that Eddie has found it She reads iu a paper that a man went insane bv finding a picture of his bride in the arms of her former sweetheart. At the office Eddie reads of a bride who went crazy on discovering letters written to her husband bv another woman. He determines to hide the letters he received from an old sweetheart He receives word that his wife has gone insane. Eddie thinks that she has found the letters He rushes home, where each thinks the other crazed with grief. There is a great confusion, during which Eddie finds the picture and Billie finds the letters. Finally everything is explained and a scene of reconciliation follows. Doomed— Imp— Unf 7.— With Claire McDowell. Jick Nelson and Charles Perley. Anne is betrothed to Will, but George Al en, a cad, covets her. One night George accosts her. She screams and Will comes to her aid. There is a fierce fight between George and Will. A crowd of vil1-crers including Roger Murray, a curious character ' watch thf fight. They hear Will threaten to kill George if he ever touches Anne again The next morning George is found dead and Will is arrested and convicted of murder. Believing hat Murray is the real murderer, Anne goes to him and bv pretending to love him, extracts a confession of murder for the sake of robbery from him. While Murray is getting the money she signals to two detectives. Will is freed and Murray takes his place behind the bars.
Simple Sapho — Joker— June 9. — With Gale Henry, Jack Dill and Milton Sims. Gale is a ootential vampire who is lured to the city by an artist. She leaves the artist, for whom she is posing, for a poet. Later she deserts the poet for a man of wealth, who gives a masked ball for her. Jack, a country youth, is there as a shepherd. He falls for Gale. She faints and he car_ ries her to his room. When her mask falls off he runs into the country, grabs his sweetheart and marries her at once to save himself from Gale.
A Box of Tricks — Victor — June 5. — With Billv Mason and Marcia Moore. Billy, a waiter, poses as a foreign nobleman. Bess' mother determines to capture him for her daughter. Charles is in love with Bess and bribes one of the boys to steal Billv's hat. The boys from the city arrive
and tell the guests that Billy is a waiter. Billy lias quite an exciting time, but the boys manage to pull him through the window and throw him into the lake. Then Charles takes Bess, in his arms.
A Burglar by Request — Nestor — June 4. — With Eddie Lyons and Edith Roberts. — Ed and Edith live just across the hall from Harry and his wife. Harry gets a friend to play burglar and scare his wife, who leaves her jewelry lying around. Ed, returning home late, meets Hank, a tramp, and takes him home with him. They enter Harry's flat by mistake. Harry takes Hank for his friend in a make-up. He gives him his wife's jewelry, When the deception is discovered," Harry calls an officer. There is a chase, for the two wives have been awakened, and Hank beats it with the co'p after him.
The Hunted Man — Imp — June 10. — With Lee Hill and Mignon Anderson. Gilder, a clerk, is charged with embezzlement and put into jail. He escapes and returns to his home. He finds a note from his wife saying that she has gone off with another man. A detective stops him and tells him he can go free if he will reveal the hiding-place of the money. His wife returns and tells him that it was all a trick. Word reaches them that the money has been found and with it the president of the bank, who had used Gilder as his tool. Gilder tells the State all he knows and is freed.
Superstitious China — (Split Reel) — Powers — June 10. — With Dr. Dorsey. Nearly all merchandise in China is carried by water, as there are few other highways. The interior commercial capital of the province of Sechuan, called Chuugking, is set upon high ground, overlooking two rivers. We see the gates of the city, and then the public laundries, where the Chinese use the primitive method of beating the clothes against the rocks. We see a public lamentation over death. The Chinese not only mourn their dead, but worship their spirits. They believe that everything in nature, whether animate or inanimate, possesses a soul. Therefore they burn quantities of paper money on the day called "Feast of All Souls," so that the souls of the dead may be "supplied with the soul of the money. On the same reel is:
Them Were the Happy Days — The old man goes to sleep and dreams that he is a boy again. He finds a vacuum cleaner and plays with it. Everyone who comes near him is sucked into it, including his darky nurse. After many other adventures, he awakes to regret his lost youth. On the same reel with "Superstitious China."
Universal Screen Magazine — Issue No. _ 22. — June 8. — The reel starts with a demonstration of "the new farm tractors which perform more work in an hour than the old types in a day. A new invention is a telephone recorder, for taking down accurately all calls received during the absence of the subscriber. Preparedness is touched upon by views of the making of enormous pieces of ordnance in the gunshops of Uncle Sam. The reel closes with a miracle in mud. by Willie Hopkins, the Screen Magazine's animated sculpture artist, called "Don't Be a Food Hog."
The Missing Wallet — Laemmle — June 6. — Edwin August and Jeannie McPherson. Jerry Marvin is in love with Lucy, whose father is the cwner of all the Sshing smacks. The captain, however, favors the suit of Arthur Granby, his foreman, and warns Jerry to keep away from his daughter. On pay-day the captain sends Jerry after his coat with his wallet in it. Jerry delays to talk with the village fool,' and when he returns with the coat the wallet cannot be found. Jerry is suspected and Lucy is the only one that believes i:i him. He -determines to leave the village, but the fool returns the wallet and the captain apologizes. .
The Almost Good Man — (Three Reels) — Gold Seal — June 5. — Harry Carey, Al. McQuarrie and Claire Du Brey. Dick and Willis hold up the stage, but find that the large sum of monev has not been shipped. The only passenger is Kitty, who is much impressed by Dick, and says that he seems to be an almost good man instead of a bad man. Many exciting events occur, in which Dick is accused of the murder of Kitty's father. Norton, a gambler, effects his escape. Believing that Kitty ioves Dick, Norton is about to leave when she suddenly throws her arms about him. Dick realizes that he has lost ahd rides away into the night.
