SUMMARY : Good picture. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 85 per cent. SHORT SUBJECTS: Gump comedy, News Reel. MOON Bitter Apples, Monte Blue. Distributed by Warner Bros. BUSINESS: Moderately good. ANDIENCE REACTION: Good. HIGHLIGHTS: Shipwreck and the capture. THEME: Story of a girl who mar¬ ries for revenge, is shipwrecked and taken captive. SUMMARY : Good program picture. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 80 per¬ cent. SHORT SUBJECTS: F B O Standard comedy. SUN The Big Parade, John Gilbert, Renee Adoree. Distributed by Metro-Goldwyn. BUSINESS: Very good. AUDIENCE REACTION: Highly fa¬ vorable. HIGHLIGHTS: Startling battle scenes, acting of principal characters, the death of Slim. THEME: The story of an American who enlisted and went to France with the American army. SUMMARY : One of the very best of the year. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 95 per¬ cent. RIALTO The Poor Nut, Jack Mulhall, Jean Arthur. Distributed by First National. BUSINESS: Very satisfactory. AUDIENCE REACTION: Good. HIGHLIGHTS: Winning of the race. THEME: Story of a campus boob who suffered from a case of inferiority complex, but through the influence of a fair coed he became the idol of his college. SUMMARY : Exceptionally pleasing comedy. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 90 per¬ cent. RIVIERA Rough Riders, Mary Astor, Charles Farrell. Distributed by Renown. BUSINESS: Fair. AUDIENCE REACTION: Fair. HIGHLIGHTS: Depicting of Theo¬ dore Roosevelt and his “Rough Riders.” THEME: Two boys love the same girl, but one is killed in battle and the other gains the girl. SUMMARY : Fair picture. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 85 per cent. SHORT SUBJECTS: Paramount News. AT DES MOINES THEATRES WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 24 STRAND Painting the Town, Glen Tryon. Distributed by Universal. BUSINESS: Good. AUDIENCE REACTION: Enjoyed comedy. HIGHLIGHTS: A speed demonstra¬ tion, comedy moments. THEME: A young man invents a car which will travel 150 miles per hour and stop in two lengths, gets a big contract and of course wins the girl. SUMMARY : The comedy was very good and got some really heartfelt ap¬ plause. The house ate it up. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 90 per cent. DES MOINES The Big Parade, John Gilbert, Renee Adoree. Distributed by Metro-Goldwyn. AUDIENCE REACTION: Highly im¬ pressed. HIGHLIGHTS: Acting of John Gil¬ bert, battle scenes, comedy movements. THEME: Story of an American boy who did his bit in the war and found his great reward in the love of a French maid. SUMMARY: The picture bucked ex¬ tremely hot weather and very strong competition and did not do as well as was expected. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 100 per cent. CAPITOL Swim, Girl, Swim, Bebe Daniels, Ger¬ trude Ederle. BUSINESS: Good. AUDIENCE REACTION: Favorable. HIGHLIGHTS: The swimming race, the swimming star’s appearance. THEME: The ugly duckling who comes out of it and swims to honors. SUMMARY : The stage show was a big attraction but the picture also pulled in well. DES MOINES Camille, Norma Talmadge. Distributed by First National. BUSINESS: Fair. AUDIENCE REACTION: Much dif¬ ference of opinion. HIGHLIGHTS: Acting of the star. THEME: Modern version of the fa¬ mous story by Dumas. SUMMARY : The star is a great fa¬ vorite here and while some audiences were very enthusiastic other shows were inclined to laugh at the sad scenes. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 85 per cent. ORPHEUM What Price Glory, Victor McLaglen, Dolores del Rio, Edmund Lowe. Distributed by Fox. BUSINESS: Good. AUDIENCE REACTION: Thrilled. HIGHLIGHTS: Battle scenes, Cap¬ tain Flagg’s and Sergeant Quirt’s af¬ fairs with women, the ending. THEME: Screen version of the stage play, showing war in all its ugly futil¬ ity. SUMMARY : This picture competed with “The Big Parade” and also with very, very warm weather. It did not do as well as it otherwise would have done but perhaps averaged better for the week than the competition. ENTERTAINMENT MERITS: 100 per cent.
