Y. // hite House at the rim to the Capitol at the hub. After filming the Capitol, you might want to shoot samples of both traditional and modern architecture in the city. The Library of Congress and the United States Supreme Court Building near by are excellent examples of the differing styles. The important point to watch in making a Washington picture is to be sure that the buildings are well lighted by sunlight, so that you can stop down to //8 or to half way between //8 and f/11. Nothing spoils a scene of a building like a washed out sky background, and nothing enhances one more than a deep blue sky. A list of the buildings, accompanied by notations of the best time of day to film the structures, will be a big help. You can easily compile such a list after consulting a map of the city. The white buildings are likely to give high meter readings which, if taken literally, will mean underexposure of the surrounding area; so, don't let the white areas fool you. When you are filming in color, you will find that the equivalent of f/9 is about right for full lighted medium shots, while //8 will usually be the correct exposure for scenes with details in the shadows or with large dark areas. The Monument theme can be carried right through to the end of the Washington section of the picture. Mount Vernon and the Masonic Memorial can be introduced nicely, by a shot down the Potomac from the windows of the Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington Cemetery sequence can follow a window shot made by tilting the camera from the base of the shaft upward to the Mall. Don't neglect the Washington Cathedral either, for there, in the warmth of afternoon sunlight, the beautiful exteriors can be filmed and. when you go inside, you can record the stained glass windows on Kodachrome with an exposure of f/1.9. The result will make you gasp. The Monument silhouetted against a sunset will provide the closing scene for the Washington section. Dual turntable music is a big help in a presentation of a picture of the nations Capitol; if you can supply a reading of the Gettysburg Address as a background for the Lincoln Memorial, you will make the collective hair of your audience stand on end. Try to synchronize the last words of the speech with a final shot which tilts down from the inscription over the massive figure of Lincoln to the strength and character of the great face. The most dramatic route south from Washington is neither the shortest nor the fastest, but for movie making it has no equal. The Skyline Drive will take you over the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia by way of what seems an almost impossible engineering feat.
