Page Twenty MOVIE EDITORIAL A Deplorable Misunderstanding IN recent editions of the daily newspapers throughout the country, there were front page splurges relative to a mythical "GIGANTIC MOVIE ASSOCIATION," that was to include practically all the vast motion picture industry. "The companies whose executive officers signed the statement," according to one paper, "are Vitagraph, Pathe, Goldwyn, Fox, and Universal. "The statement," the account went on to say, "said that the following companies had indicated willingness to join the proposed association: Metro, Famous Players, First National, Triangle, United Artists, D. W. Griffith, Realart, and RobertsonCole." This "gigantic movie association" was the evident joining of hands of all the companies into a "communist organization." In other words — exit the smaller company; exit the organized executive departments ; exit individual personalities. Enter a Lenin-formed concern — to draw upon the name of the leader of Bolshevik Russia. How this report seeped into the regime of the newspapers is not known to this day. But in some way it did, and the result is a deplorable misunderstanding. Those who have^ read what has come before: dismiss it from your minds. The real truth of the matter is this : There has been a re-organization of the present National Association of the motion picture industry. It is seriously being considered that Postmaster General Hays be asked to head it "for the very same reasons," to quote William A. Johnston of the Motion Picture News, "that the name of ex-President Taft was mentioned at the Cleveland convention last year as a possible head of the Exhibitors' League. "The object of the re-organization," Mr. Johnston continues, "so far as we know, is simply to make the present Association more comprehensive as to membership, more active and more influential. Its aims remain unchanged. They are, as before, to promote the good of the industry at large and defend it against unjust legislation, the same kind of organization in scope and principle as is had by every other industry in the country." So do not be puzzled by the scarehead : "GIGANTIC MOVIE ASSOCIATION." There is to be no such organization. The heads of the motion picture industry who haVe formed an organization whereby to meet and discuss ways and means of advancing the motion picture industry, sitriply want to advance it more by soliciting tht services of a widely known figure such as Postmaster General Hays, who would lend added prestige to the industry and its combined endeavors. This department will answer inquiries regarding stars, studios and other a.spects of the film industry. Address all communications to Motion Play Editor, MOVIE WEEKLY, 113-119 West 40th Street.
