CAST Captain Yank Barston Elmo Lincoln Vance Clayton Harry Van Meter Helen, his wife Mabel Ballin Peg, their child -....Nancy Caswell Dead Light Burke Frank Brownlee Plum Duff Hargis Paul Weigel Second Mate Dick La Reno Baltimore Bucko Noble Johnson Island Girl Beatrice Dominguez THE STORY QAPTAIN YANK BARSTOW was under no illusions as to the temper of his crew and he knew well that in iron fisted control lay the only safety for his passengers. The Southem Cross was a staunch schoonerrigged vessel which was consigned to a Central American port loaded with a cargo of pianos. The pianos were loaded, too, but Captain Barstow did not know anything about that when he shipped Vance Clayton, his wife Helen and their six-year old child, Peg, for the voyage. Clayton was convoying the precious contraband cargo, for the pianos were filled with muskets and ammunition consigned to Ramon, the would-be president of a South American republic. Clayton was the agent of the consignees of the rifles and it was necessary that he land them undetected by the port authorities. Therefore he began secretely to stir the rough crew to mutiny. Barstow only increased the rigidity of his discipline, much to the hoiTor of Helen who could not understand the cause for it and was ignorant of the part which her husband was playing in the affair. When the vessel anchored in the harbor Burke swore out a warrant against the captain for attempted murder. At the trail, rather than tell the truth and thus imperil her happiness, Barstow remained silent. He was convicted and sent to prison for five years with his mate. They escape, however, and ADVERTISING swim across the shark infested bay, Barstow dragging Plum Duff who had been wounded in the leg by one of the guards' shots. The opposite shore was the habitat of a crew of deserters, murderers, thieves and ticket of leave men from all parts of the world under the command of Baltimore Bucko, the biggest ruffian of the west coast. Barstow conquered him and became in turn commander of the beach combers. Having delivered his smuggled guns safely to Ramon, Claj'ton sent Burke back for another contraband cargo while outwardly enjoying friendly relations with the American consul. When the second cargo came the revolution started and Clayton, unable to leave with his family, on account of a smallpox scare, was caught in his own net. They all fled to the American consulate where the president of the republic had also taken refuge. Dead Light Burke endeavored to make Clayton assist in the defense of the consulate but Clayton took the first opportunity to escape through a back entrance, his exit proving an entering wedge for the insurgents. In the meantime Barstow had heard of the insun'ection and taing command of his beach combers, rowed across the bay and after desperate fighting rescued the beleaguered garrison and the consul. Clayton was killed in the street fighting and the little party of rescued and rescuers fought its way back to the ^yha^f. The press agent of the insurrectos stops the fantastic revolution by announcing that the insurgent leader has been killed and the insurgents were anxious to return to their former allegiance. Burke had been mortally wounded during the last stand at the wharf and knowing that he was about to die, confessed his part in the mutiny and the false accusation of Captain Barstow.
