OKLAHOMA SCHOOL OF THE AIR The Oklahoma School of the Air; under the direction of Jesse E. Burkett, has expanded its services this semester to include three new weekly broadcasts bringing to a total of five the number now being produced. All programs will be. broadcast twice to enable more schools to participate. The Oklahoma School of the Air has been organized to broaden the scope of the elementary schools of Oklahoma. Its programs are planned especially for classroom use in the elementary schools and are directed particularly to the rural schools, the consilodated schools and the smaller independent districts in the WNAD listening area. For the benefit of teachers, the school of the air furnishes manuals to assist in the classroom use of these programs. The manuals include suggestions for pre-broadcast activities, an outline of the content of each program, and suggestions for follow-up activities. Free Program Bulletins and teachers’ manuals may be had by addressing requests to Oklahoma School of the Air, Radio Station WNAD, Norman, Oklahoma. Following are brief descriptions of the five new Program series which begin in February. News Round-Up* Mondays, 11:30-11:45 Tuesdays, 1:30-1:45 An authoritative summary of the week’s news from three levels: local, national and international. Associated Press teletype releases will be supplemented with background material and the news will be written and edited to fit the elementary grade levels five to eight. The newscasts will be presented alternately by William S. Morgan, Production Manager; Frank Baker, Chief announcer, and Jesse E. Burkett, School of the Air director. _ Rhythm and Song* Mondays, 1:15-1:45 Wednesdays, 11:30-12:00 These programs are directed primarily to the classroom that has neither the time nor teaching staff for regular classwork in music. However, it will prove an interesting supplement to any regularly organized music program. Children of the University Laboratory school will participate in broadcasts, doing the songs and rhythms on the air that listening children will do in the classroom. Pupils in any elementary grade which has not had opportunities in beginning songs and rhythms will find this an interesting series, Mrs. Dolly Connally, assistant professor of music education, will conduct the series. Feb. 2—The First Singing School—Mrs. Connally: and Laboratory School Pupils. Feb. 9—Play Party Games. Feb. 16—The Old Songs. Feb. 23—We Salute. ~~ 4 fee WNAD PROGRAM BULLETIN @ 7 Making Friends With Music* Tuesdays, 11:30-11:45 Fridays, 1:30-1:45 This new series deals with music appreciation on the upper elementary grade level. Mrs. Frank Baker, graduate of Baylor University’s School of Music, will direct the programs and will make extensive use of the WNAD library of recorded music. She will weave* a story element into the programs to provide interest and continuity. Folk music and composed music will © be used in the series. Mrs. Baker formerly taught voice and did graduate work at Baylor University. Feb. 3—Origin of the Instruments of the Orchestra. Feb. 10—Peter and the Wolf (identifying instruments) Feb. 17—Folk Music—Early American, Indian, Pioneer and Cowboy. Feb. 24—Negro Spirituals. _ Spotlight on Health* Wednesdays, 1:30-1:45 Thursdays, 11:30-11:45 Spotlight on health has been planned by a committee of teachers, school administrators, public welfare workers and members of the state and county health departments. The focus of planning has been on the improvement of health practices among children in the respective communities, and in interesting them to contribute to the improvement of health in their several communities. The series is directed primarily for grades five to eight. Feb. 4—We Turn the Spotlight on Health—Dr. L. T. Rogers and committee on health series. Feb. 11—Blessing or Menace . . . Water—Dr. Rogers and guests. Feb. 18—Friend or Enemy . . . Milk—Dr. Rogers and guests. Feb. 25—Burn, Bury or Banish . . . Waste Disposal— Dr. Rogers and guests. ’ End of the Rainbow* Thursdays, 1:30-1:45 Fridays, 11:30-11:45 Storytelling has been included on the School of the Air at the request of a large number of primary teachers. Miss Elaine Sanford, senior in the school of radio drama, will be the storyteller. Miss Sanford has carefully selected stories of five different types for this series. These include: (1) Adventure stories; (2) Fairy Tales; (3) True stories of well-known Americans; (4) Animal stories; (5) Children of other lands. Feb. 5—East River Adventure Feb. 12—Comanche Feb. 19—The Drum That Went West ~ Feb. 26—Surprise Story. LIVE MUSIC PROGRAMS Songs of the Church Tues., Thurs., Sat., 8:30-8:45 The world’s great hymns are sung for you each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning by two students in the School of Music. Miss Geraldine Bullis presents the Tuesday and Saturday Programs and Mr. Glen Kezer presents the Thursday program.
