They are led by Captain Calvin Jones, a truly magnificent guard and a virtually unanimous AllAmerican selection last year. Alex Karras, 245-pound sophomore, is expected to nail down the other guard spot, thus giving Iowa plenty of strength down the middle. Veteran quarterback Jerry Reichow, Left Half Earl Smith (top Big Ten scorer in *54) and Right Half Eddie Vincent (conference rushing champ with a 6,$ average) head a batch of capable backs. Iowa will be nobody's patsy this year.

It's UCLA all over again on the Pacific Coast, say the experts. Red Sanders' Bruin juggernaut, unbeaten in nine starts last Fall, was ineligible for a Rose Bowl appearance last New Year's Day because of a P.C.C. rule against successive appearances in the Pasadena classic. This season the '54 national champions will be gunning for both the conference crown and the bowl bid.
Even though the entire first string -line is gone, UCLA is impressive. There is plenty of depth on hand. Mainspring in the backfield is All-American Fullback Bob Davenport, the big gun in Sanders' single wing -balanced line offense. Jim Decker, who averaged 10.8 yards per carry last Fall, returns to halfback. A strong
