With this, the townspeople, led by their vain and unscrupulous Mayor (Claude Rains), hope to win the King’s banner and the coveted honor of being the King’s clockmakers. All the adults in the village have rallied behind the plan. In addition, over the heated objections of Truson the schoolmaster (Van Johnson), the Mayor has ordered that the children give up both school and play to devote all their time to the project. However, a calamity falls upon the town. Hordes of rats, driven from a neighboring village by a flood, invade Hamelin, killing the dogs and cats, attacking adults and children alike, and devouring the cupboards . (more )
