4 Credits for *The Pled Piper of Hamelln* The Pied Piper (also played by Van Johnson), who has a knack of popping up whenever his magical music is needed to rid a village of a scourge of one sort or another, agrees to spirit away the hateful rodents for 50,000 guilders — the entire contents of the town treasury. But when the Piper's task is completed, the Mayor and his henchmen on the Council cheat the Piper of his pay. They want to melt the guilders into golden chimes for their prized clock. Glory, not honor, is their goal. The townspeople go along with the scheme. The Piper takes his vengeance upon the greedy adults of Hamelin by luring away the blameless children. They happily follow him and his Joyful music. V/ith the children gone, Hamelin finds it¬ self in the midst of a calamity far more painful than its plague of rats. The townspeople turn to the Mayor and his henchmen for help. But their only reply is with decrees and cannon fire - and this is not enough to bring back the children of Hamelin, Something more is needed — and that is supplied by Truson the schoolmaster. * * * SYNOPSIS OF SCENES ACT I Scene 1 Clearing in forest (Piper is introduced). 2 A meadow (Truson is Introduced). 3 Market place (Tov/n of Hamelin is introduced). 4 Interior of schoolhouse (Mara-Truson romance is 5 Interior of council room (Mayor and Council are introduced) , introduced) .
