February 5* 1958 SENATOR WILEY COMMENDS NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMPANY FOR ITS CONTRIBUTION TO 'MIRACLE MEDIUM' OF EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION The National Broadcasting Company has been commended by Senator Alexander Wiley of Wisconsin for NBC's contribution to the "miracle medium" of educational television. Senator Wiley's comments on the NBC Educational Television Project appear in a recent issue (Jan. 16) of the Congressional Record. "In discussing educational television in the 48 states, I do not believe that anyone should commit the error of failing to observe the very important role played in educational activities by commercial television in our land," Senator Wiley said. "After all, commercial television is the fundamental type of TV in America. American sponsors have not only paid the bills of the vast TV industry, they have made it possible - directly and indirectly - for commercial TV to aid educational TV . "I like the thoughts expressed by Mr. Robert W. Sarnoff, President of NBC, who said: 'Every citizen has a stake in the success with which these (educational television) stations carry out their mission. The drastic shortage of teachers and classrooms lends special urgency to their efforts to build themselves into a major educational force. Those of us in television have an interest beyond that of the average citizen to lend such support as we can in solving these problems.'
